I’ve been following topics related to mirror-less cameras and am thinking of adding a Sony a6000 to my arsenal of Nikons. I have a couple of questions: there seem to be issues about battery life - is this a worry; any recos on SD cards; is the WiFi as sketchy as some reviews suggest. I plan to use the Sony as a walking-around camera to replace a couple of point-and-shoots (e.g., Nikon Coolpix AW100) with small sensors.
PS Handled one at BestBuy yesterday (resisted GAS) and really like the feel with the kit 16-50.

Why have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)and just stay with your Nikons?

Buy a second battery for backup and worry no more.

The AW100 is too limited and I’m tired of always lugging a dslr around. The Sony would be very close to a pocket camera but seems to rival my Nikons (D300, D5200) except for the reach of my P900.

The A6000 is a fine camera, and although the kit 16-50 lens gets some negative reviews, it's actually a decent lens, just not pro qualilty. I think for a walk-around, it's fine. And yes, it'll go through a battery fairly quickly, but that's just how it is with mirrorless cameras. The batteries are small and just don't have the capacity that a DSLR battery does. That's just life with a mirrorless camera. Most just carry along a spare battery or two. I wouldn't let the battery issues deter you from getting that camera. It's one of the best values around. A lot of bang for the buck.

Battery life hasn't been a worry for me. I just turn it off when I'm not actively shooting. I carry a second battery, but have never needed it.

Here is a plot of my battery life experiment. Sony a6000, battery life with camera "off" and Airplane mode "off."
Promaster is the only third-party batt if have been able to find in my locale. Notice the 'stair-step' behavior of the Sony battery, I have never been able to reconcile why.

There are some focus issues with this camera. You will need to set the camera up properly for your type of use. They are not insurmountable but can be irritating. Google A6000 focus for more information.

Hadn’t run across that in my reading. Thanks I’ll check it out. Also, not sure I need 179 focus points.

Buy extra batteries. I carry 3. Battery life is, IMO, one of the few cons to mirrorless/4/3s cameras.

Pay attention camera stores.

I also did an unscientific battery experiment as the earlier poster and had similar results. I “never” take my a6000 out without bringing along, at least, one extra battery. I bought mine with the earlier 18-55 lens, which I replaced with the Sony 18-105 f/4, which (aside from the larger size) is a gem.

Wifi on the a-6000 works just fine, once you figure it out. The biggest issue I have with this camera is dust on the sensor. It is so exposed that any time you change lenses, it is likely to grab some dust particle. I solved my problem by buying a Sony 24-240 mm Lense that I hardly ever have to change. Good little camera.

I bought the A6000 over a year ago and really like it as my walk-around camera. I did add the 18-200 lens to my kit. That gives me a nice wide angle and telephoto as a walk around lens. Yes the battery life on the Sony is not the best, but the solution is to just have some extra batteries. They are small and easy to carry around in your pocket.

I moved from a Nikon D3 to a D810 and late last year I acquired a Fujifilm X-T20 with the 18-55 lens and I carry them together with the 70-200 or the 28-200 on the Nikon. I'm not suggesting the Fujifilm over the Sony, I am sharing what I found to be very convenient and workable for me. I can barely tell that the small camera is there and I've been able to take some shots that I would not have were it not with me.
