anyone use them ?; I am considering one for my Nikon D810 ( but, even Canon users can respond ); in the close, cramped quarters particularly of some European cities, are they beneficial enough to be worth lugging them around; they look heavy, and, are expensive ( I know, I could rent one )

I have (and use) them for a couple of my film cameras. They have "come in handy" when I use wide angle lenses, particularly for architectural work.

When my principal reason for photography was in preparation for Architectural Renderings, they were invaluable!---but since I
got to the point where I could relegate all that prep work to others, I haven't touched one in years!

You can adjust perspective (horizontally and vertically) quite nicely in PS and save a lot of money on a lens.

Many times I've had a hankering for one...looks like they would be interesting to play around with, but the $$$$ was always a deterrent. My "work-around" when I need the wider angle and/or perspective control of one of these specialized lenses, is to rely on PhotoShop....either by shooting overlapping images and then 'stitching' them together with PhotoMerge...or using one of the many "Perspective Control" options in PS.

Or Tilt-Shift. Can you shoot these hand held? 'Cause you ain't gonna be able to put up a tripod on most European urban streets.

They're not particularly heavy, but they are expensive. I have the 24, 45 and 85 and use them almost all the time while traveling. You have the right idea renting, though. Don't waste your money on the Rokinon ones - they are ok, but not as good as the Nikkors.

This is a quick comparison between a 14mm (14-24) lens, and a 24 PC-E with 4 images shot and merged as a stitched panorama. You can see the volume deformation and extension distortion I always complain about with the 14mm lens, and how much less it is with the stitched image. I used lateral shift to get 3 of the images, than rotated the camera a bit to get the last shot.

Of course you can shoot hand held. F/4 is f/4.

Actually it's not the same, and that is only one part of what a PC lens can do. you can also alter the plane of focus. The post processing solution usually costs a lot of pixels and image degradation, not to mention a narrower field of view. Post processing adjustments should be considered a last-ditch effort, not a go-to solution.

I've been thinking of buying one. The shift function is great (to control converging lines), but the Tilt function (to control depth of field) is even more intriguing.
