Are you insane? With due respect your own country took firearms from law abiding citizens. So did Australia. You still have violent crime where you live and some of it is with firearms. We in America are doing our best to not allow that to happen.

Look at your influx of violent Muslims. I guarantee many of them have firearms for the day when they choose to implement Sharia Law in GB. Or is that just an old wives tale, similar to the Iranians saying they will wipe America from the planet? You remember, when POS Obama said they were just joking.

I'm not sure about Australia but here in the UK, it was the law abiding citizens that wanted firearms taken out of private hands. You couldn't go anywhere without the risk of being shot with a flintlock.

Here you are, going off on one hell of a tangent, bringing up western movies, sexual preferences and so on. Nobody disagrees that some government policies are necessary for the good of citizens. Police are necessary, medical services are necessary as well as a standing military. They are all a given.

But the government does not have the right to tell us what vehicle we will drive, what firearms, within reason, we will own and so on. Our Constitution delineates what powers the government can have and then, what rights we citizens have. You might recall that we might all still be British subjects (that term, subject, in itself, is an offensive term to most Americans) had we not revolted against King George III and his unjust policies toward American subjects. Our Constitution protects us from an unjust government.

They do have the right to tell you what vehicle you can drive if it's not up to the standards required for use on the roads.

Thank you so very much. I do appreciate the notoriety. Of course you are just as much in these discussions as I and the rest of us are. The difference is you seem to be against America having its own laws and doing for ourselves. You seem to insist on putting your British opinion into our American business. Of course you may do that but I thought we settled the British opinion in American business back in 1776.

Dennis

As I said a couple of comments back, this is a discussion, not a vote. It's an international website, not an American only one.

Surely you are not comparing a disease to violent behavior. Also, I wonder if you are telling the truth about, millions of people dying of malaria each year. That seems like an exaggeration to me.

Thank you for the link. But I still submit that 429,000 do not make for millions dying each year.

Dennis

Okay, I got that one wrong. It's millions of people infected each year.

I'm not making that jump. The fact that some weapons are already restricted was my point. It's just a case of where do you draw that line? Personally, I don't think you should be restricting semi-automatic weapons. But, I do think you should be keeping an eye on who's got them and making sure that they know what they're doing with them.

How would you keep an eye on who has them?

For a start, they would have to be registered. Before we introduced a blanket ban, a couple of friends owned guns. They were registered, kept in gun safes and the police could turn up at any time to ensure that they were safely locked away. We didn't really have any major problems. Then after one incident, a total ban was introduced. I personally think it was a knee-jerk reaction and I never had any problem with them owning them. I went to the firing range with them a couple of times, but I personally never saw the attraction. One of them took it very seriously and had loads of medals and awards, I think the other just liked the noise it made. Either way, they were both responsible in how they were used, stored and transported to and from the range. Was it possible that one or both could have just snapped one day? Yes of course. But they did have to go through some psych tests and interviews before they got their licences. Now that I think of it, I'm not sure if they had any re-evaluations later, I'd have to ask them.

I do not want the police or government officials popping into my house. I still value my privacy and do not want to live in a police state like Nazi Germany. I have never been charged with a felony. I have a license to carry and have been trained by the state and the Marine Corps.

I really do understand that. You have to remember that we have very different cultures when it comes to guns. Gun ownership has never been a common thing here. The people who want to own them were usually quite willing to put up with checks in order to keep them. I think ownership is treated more casually in the US. I'm sure that you're a responsible gun owner, but you have to admit that not all owners are and laws are always made with the lowest common denominator in mind. As Bob Dylan wrote: "The masters make the rules, for the wise men and the fools".

Our forefathers were pretty damn smart! Smart enough to send the islanders back across the pond....with a bloody nose no less.

The main reason we won has more to with the cost England faced fighting the war against the rebels, financially the War was a great burden that the King could not afford.

I think the French had a lot to do with it as well. They invested a lot of troops and money and it eventually led to the French revolution.

The fact remains: We won our independence. I have put my life on the line for independence. I will not give up mine easily.

I would be inclined to agree too. I think that anyone looking back at their country's history will find things that should never have happened. But, you have to look at it in the context of what was going on in the rest of the world at the time.

In 1966, I didn't analyze what was going on in the world. My country called. I went. We can get smart by reading. The only way to get wisdom is by the time payment plan.
