I have a Nikon d5100 when I plug in a 16GB card it says no SD card inserted with a 8GB card it's okay
so what's going on is the card bad ?
Is the card locked? Once in a while, I'll slide the little switch on my card without noticing.
It seems to be a intermittent problem on the 16MB card I turned the switch on and off sill the same
problem

Is the card one that has been tested and recommended by Nikon? (See your user’s manual)

It's a SanDisk Ultra
There’s more than one type of Ultra card. Make sure it’s one that Nikon recommends. If it still isn’t recognized by your camera, I would toss it.
The following SD memory cards have been tested and approved for use in the D5100.
Cards with class 6 or faster write speeds are recommended for movie recording.
Recording may end unexpectedly when cards with slower write speeds are used.

SanDisk
Toshiba
Panasonic

If it's just this one particular card, try it in another camera. If it works intermittently, send it to Sandisk. It may have a lifetime warranty.
Problem with the d5100 and the 16 GB SDcard was dirty contacts after cleaning them with alcohol
it was okay
Was going to recommend trying to format the card in the camera but I see you have fixed the problem. Great idea to clean the contacts.
I believe I would still format the card in the camera. Doesn’t hurt and might help
After downloading and backing up, I always format the card in my D5100. Knock on wood, no problems.
