Weird Aurora

While out imaging two nights ago I noticed my subs were getting brighter and brighter. I looked up and saw the weirdest Aurora I've ever seen! Simply a band of undulating light (with green streaks) from the east to west horizon.

Of course this phenomenon just had to cut through the area I was imaging!

The rest of the sky looked relatively normal, per the last picture. However, it wasn't until I started processing images that I realized the whole sky was being impacted by GREEN Aurora. I'm currently attempting to salvage some of subs from my five targets that night...

All the images were shot w/ a Sony RX10 III, tripod mounted, 24mm, f/4, 10sec, ISO1600. All the Aurora images are panoramas of at least 2-3 images.

Enjoy!

I understand this display is called STEVE:

I found your article quite interesting, as I observed something similar in early February of last year, while visiting Coldfoot, Alaska. A band of what I at first thought a jet contrail just before dark, but lasted for more than an hour after dark. It too stretched from horizon to horizon, just wobbled a little over time, and then it decided to 'put on a show' well after dark! It started out green then turned on the colors... Thanks for sharing!!!

I too initially thought it was a LARGE jet contrail but not so.

I've been shooting Auroras for years and have never seen STEVE before; a rather unique experience.

Nice photos. I was fortunate enough to observe and capture STEVE in October of 2015. Really an exciting night!

Really pretty capture.
This is something I would someday love to get a chance to see and capture.
Quite nicely done.

I'll bet that was really cool to see Brian.

It really was! I'd never seen STEVE before and was a little baffled by what I was seeing, to the extent I rousted out my wife to verify my eyes...
