Lens Repair

Moisture had developed behind the lens of my Tamron 18 x 200 lens (Canon). I exposed the lens to a simple drying process which dried the moisture but left some slight residue on the lens.
U tube makes the clean up seem simple; removing a vinyl ring, several screws, cleaning the debris and reassembly.
I am reasonably competent with tools. Hence, is this a difficult undertaking or am I better off having this done by a professional?

You are not saying if it is on the outside lens. If it is, I would do it. Repair would probably be more costly than a new lens.

I’ve rebuilt engines, clocks and many intricate gadgets but will not touch taking a lens apart. They’re too delicate and precise to be fooled without a competent technician and a clean room. Can you recall anytime when you tried to fix the plumbing only to have something go wrong? Could happen when you pull your lens apart and then what are you going to do? Send it in to a certified shop or manufacturer if you value that lens.

This my inclination and you have confirmed my several attempts at less "delicate" repairs.
Thanks.

And what do you see on your picture? Maybe it doesn't show, or could be taken out in Photoshop.

Thanks. I would have to remove five or six screws apparently to clean the back side of the outside lens.
Stay well.

Check first with the manufacturer, explain the problem and ask for an estimate. Sending pictures of the lens could help to give them a better idea.
If the price of repairs is reasonable you know what to do.
Let that job to a professional.

I purchased a 28-300 Tamron lens some years ago and after 18 months it stopped automatic focusing. Tamron quoted me $100 to repair. I chose not to have it repaired and since have only purchased Canon "L" lenses for my Canon bodies.

Hi. I'm Rick and a professional camera technician. It sounds like you're talking about removing the front lens group. This is not to difficult. The only thing is you'll need to re-calibrate your infinity focus when you're done. This is controlled by the position of the front group. It's best to mark the exact position of the front group before you begin. If you'd prefer to have it cleaned professionally, please contact me via PM.

I like to tinker with most things and the one question I normally ask myself is what is the cost of paying someone else to perform the task versus the cost of having someone reassemble the device after I take it apart and can't get it back correctly. If you don't break a part, there is little difference in cost and you may just fix it and in that case no cost at all! Your call!

I usually charge $65 to do a minor cleaning on a lens. Most shops charge more. If you're confident with your abilities, then go for it. Keep me in mind though if you need more extensive camera repairs.

I am quite handy, but I would not mess with a lens. Have it professionally cleaned.
