Hi all,
I'm going to be driving across eastern Canada from Sault Ste. Marie to Nova Scotia in July, and I plan to pass through Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, probably spending a couple of days there. I don't plan to do any backcountry hiking, but I want to explore the areas along Route 60 through the southern part of the park. I wondered if any of you have experience photographing in the area. I'll be loaded for bear (and moose, and loons, and whatever) so I'm not looking for equipment advice so much as locations.
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
George
It's a huge park but unless you plan on canoeing, there isn't a great deal to do there. It is a wilderness park, not much in the way of facilities.
There are a number of Interpretive Trails to take but they are relatively short, well under a mile, usually.
It is a very pretty, semi-wilderness park. Activities primarily include water activities, like boating, fishing, and so on. There is an abundance of wildlife to see and photograph, including moose and bear. If you are into camping, there are numerous campgrounds that range from full service RV camping to tenting sites and everything in between. There is also wilderness camping with no services at all. If you are not into that, you can rent a cabin at one of the 3 lodges in the park. Also some nice hiking trails, most are pretty easy, including with boardwalks, and so on.

AAA may have some suggestions.

Driving up and down Hwy 60 will probably grant you many photo ops...just look for the long line-up of cars along the side of the road which is usually a good indicator that something has been spotted just off the road! lol But as others have said, there are several good trails for wildlife viewing. Our favourite for wildlife is the Mizzy Lake trail...it's about a 10-12km loop but you obviously don't have to hike the whole thing. Check out the Visitor's Centre as well as the East and West gates of the park...they have boards inside which people can record their sightings. It will list what they saw, when & where. Hwy 60 is divided into km's so someone might record "Black Bear - 10am today - km26", so at least it will give you an idea where certain types of wildlife are lurking :) Good luck and safe travels!

I have just two words for you..... BUG SPRAY!!
On the Highway 60 corridor watch out for "moose jams", lines of cars observing moose at the side of the road. Seco66 and big-guy provide useful info. The Spruce Bog trail is relatively short, less than 2 km, often has a few birds at the feeder near the trailhead. I tend to stay away from the Park during the summer months; the place is thick with bugs and tourists. The former will carry small children and pets away, unfortunately they don't discriminate between yours and the latter. Keep them both on a leash. Cover all exposed flesh. A bug suit can prove to be handy.
As always, early in the morning (sunrise) is the best time for sighting the larger animals.
