My wife and I are heading to Maine this summer to visit relatives and (in my case) doing a fair amount of photography. This is our first trip there - about 2 weeks total time. Likely flying into Boston, spending a day or so then heading north along the coast. We'll be spending a few days around Portsmouth guided by our cousins. Then heading north to Acadia NP. Other possible destinations would be Moosehead Lake, then circling back south perhaps through Vermont.
We mainly enjoy outdoors pursuits. I enjoy landscape and wildlife photography equally. Will have my D500 with some long lenses and either my D800 or (hopefully) a new D850.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for special places to photograph along the coast, quaint fishing villages, mountain vistas. I'd classify us as "mild" hikers. We don't do 1000 ft. elevation gain hikes these days. Top wildlife catches would be loons, moose, bear and puffins. I checked and the tours that actually land on the puffin nesting islands are booked except for the boats which simply circle the islands.
Thank you for any help you might have.

In Wiscasset there is a "two-foot" railroad using vintage equipment - unique to Maine.

Baxter State Park may be a hike from Acadia, but it is well worth it. Mt. Katahdin is where the AT starts on its way to Georgia. Sandy Pond inside the park is a great place to find moose feeding and Katahdin reflects well in the pond. Maine has 63 (I believe) lighthouses. Check-out Larry's recent images of Nubble (
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-528143-1.html). Going thru New Hampshire to get to Vermont, don't forget Kancamagus Highway. Great vistas as well as more moose. Vermont Rt 100 is a beautiful drive coming back.
Wow, great suggestions already. I have to get back to work but I see I'll be up late tonight exploring all your links and ideas. Thanks so much.
Where in Maine? It makes a difference, Boston to Ft Kent Maine is almost a 10 hr drive. VT (noted below) is almost a 3 to 4 hr or more drive from Maine depending on where you start. Seaside landscapes are great along the ocean but their many beautiful sites, too, in the woods and mountains. Puffins are the best in June and july, BOOK your Puffin cruise as soon as you can they are usually sold out by June. Look on the web for lighthouses and day cruises.
When you are in Portsmouth, you may want to go to New Castle (next town) and see Fort Constitution. This is where the first action occurred during the revolution. Has a great and interesting history. There is also a Lighthouse on the same property. You mentioned several lens, if you have a long lens you can also shoot the lighthouse in the middle of the bay, best shot from the park in New Castle (next to the fort).
While in Maine along with Cadillac mountain (herds of people) you may want to visit Deer Island (by car) and travel to Stonington an beautiful fishing and lobster village. There are so many places in the area I cannot list them all. However one other that comes to mind is Camden ME, this town host the large schooner fleet that takes people on long overnight cruises, Best to see the ships on Sat afternoon and Sunday as they are out of port most of the weekdays except for the few that do day trips.
This is just a few that have not been mentioned by other Hoggers...

Here are a couple of more photos:
#1 Taken from New Castle NH Park
#2 Pemiquid Light at sun down
#3 Pemiquid Light down at the waters edge
Also not shown here Boothbay Harbor... Lots of photo oppertunities here
Hope this is helpful for you
There are some gorgeous views possible around Mt. Katahdin. Due to it's height and location, it's supposed to be the first place the sun hits in North America in the morning. If you can actually hike up onto the mountain, there are many opportunities for great pics. Ask the locals about "Knife edge". Acadia has some incredible beauty, too.
As far as Vermont goes, you'd need six months to do it justice. Any place around Killiington ski resort is a winner, though. Hope this gives you some ideas.

That is one heck of a hike, though. Been there, done that. Probably too old to do it again....
Acadia and Cadillac Mountain are among our favorites. Both Bar Harbor and Camden are excellent "walkabout" towns.

Hey, thanks again everyone. I will check out all these possibilities. I enjoy planning our trips. Lots of fun putting the puzzle together.
slightly off beat side trip from Portsmouth.
Take a ferry out to Star Island and spend a night at the old hotel.
It is one of the islands included in " The Isle of Shoals."
It is ( very ) rustic but it is a nice small island, easy to explore in a day and both the sunrise and sunset
can be magnificent from out there.

Great idea!
I’d tou don’t have time for an overnight, a day trip via ferry to one of the Casco Bay islands from Portland is a nice alternative.
