#7 and 9... P38 Lightning. The WWII fighter that shot down General Yamamoto, the fellow who planned the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The pilot of the P-38 who shot him down lived here in Redmond Oregon, home before and after the War. It's an interesting story and there was controversy over which one of two pilots got the kill. They actually recovered Yamamotos body and determined that he was hit in the head by one of Rex Barbers bullets. Barber ran and insurance firm in Redmond, and became the mayor for a number of years.

Interesting story, well covered by Google search on many internet sites. It was a complex mission involving many aircraft converging over thousands of miles of ocean to intercept the Japanese Betty Bomber carrying Yamamoto and a number of escorts.

The flight was called Operation Vengeance.
