LR, pics there then not there

I recently moved photos from my PC to my Mac Pro. They're in a hard drive folder and then I moved those photos to external drive. I checked to see that the images were in both places, they were and I could open the images. BUT when I want to add the images into LR bad things happen. In Library I do my usual import, select the folder from the external drive. The images appear briefly with check marks and then disappear in a flash! The screen goes grey, there's no message and my only option is cancel. The images are a mixture of raw and JPEG.

Coincidently, I did a back up, or tried to and my computer was moving 5000 images to the cloud. After two days and nowhere near done, I canceled out of that.

HELP! What is going on? I tried the web and saw nothing that would address this problem. Thank you in advance

Do you have an account on the Adobe forums? You will get a better answer there.

Apple is your best answer. That's the way they like it.

I had almost the same problem. I can't explain exactly what happened but my issue had to do with the catalog. I have a portable hard drive with my photos and that I move between computers. My problem happened when one computer had the LR desktop app (LR6?) and the other has the newer LR CC with the upgraded catalog. Windows file explorer showed all the files were there, but they showed up quickly in LR then disappeared. The two different catalogs don't play well between the original LR and LR CC. So after much effort I now have the upgraded LR CC catalog with no issues.

"I recently moved photos from my PC to my Mac Pro. They're in a hard drive folder and then I moved those photos to external drive. So the images are on the PC and the external? and you are connecting the external to the Mac and trying to import them using Lightroom Classic CC?

Is the Mac new? If so, perhaps it's doing things like moving, not copying all your pictures to the cloud and by the time you engage LR to add to the library they are moved to the cloud. Mac's do things like this thinking it knows what is best for you and doesn't really explain it to you. It just does it.

In any case, you might need to engage in help from Apple to see if your machine is doing such a thing. If not, then you'll have to contact Adobe. I've done a chat with them and they were very helpful by taking control of my computer and fixing things to make it work after the last major LR and PS upgrade. My video drivers needed to be updated was all but they did it for me.

If the pictures appeared with a check and then dimmed it is because Lightroom thinks they are dupicates when you try to import them. They are still in the catalog. I've had this problem before. It is not an Apple problem and it is not a Lightroom problem per se. I don't remember exactly how I resolved this issue but it was resolved without reimporting anything.

If they are already in Lightroom You just have to redirect the folder structure to the new location. No need to import.

The images you trying to import already exist in your catalog. To prove this theory, simply create a new catalog and try to import those same images. They should be available for import to a new catalog.

Try Lightroom Intermediate Help Group on Face Book, or Laura Shoe, or The Lightroom Queen, if you still have this problem.

Not sure if this will help. In PSE's catalogue an image can loose its connection to a file if it is moved outside of PSE. If this happens when you click on the image it should give a dialogue box with an option to reconnect. In file there is an option to "reconnect" for a missing file or all files. You might see if LR has that same option in FILE.

You appear to be doing a lot of moving of images! Are you also moving the image catalog to the same location? To move images once they are linked to LR you need to move the images from within the catalog or things can, as you've found, get fairly messed up. If files are already included in a catalog the images will show up briefly grayed out and, as you noted, be gone, so the catalog you are using thinks the images are already loaded. You can go to the folders panel and unlink that folder by using the minus sign and then trying re-loading the folder in, which might be the easiest thing to do at this point;using the same photos with the same names in the same catalog means the catalog will hold all metadata associated with those images. In future, move all linked files from within the application and this problem will not occur.

I wonder if they were already in this catalog, and you had Don't Import Duplicates checked in the Import dialog?

If you move the actual files outside of LR, then LR gets confused about where things are. There are ways to tell it to go look for something it can't find, consult the online help, sorry I don't remember off the top of my head.

Actually Macs always copy between two filesystems (i.e., two distinct drives) by default.
