ATIK Color Horizon - Bayer Pattern

After almost a month of testing the subject camera I've found I've been using the wrong Bayer pattern for debayering the RAW FIT files! I've been using RGGB which is the normal default pattern in most astro-image processing software. As it turns out the correct Bayer pattern is GRBG. It makes a HUGE difference in color, image quality and ease of postprocessing!!

Caveat: GRBG is the correct debayering pattern for PixInsight. It may be different in other software!? I'll be testing different patterns in ImagesPlus to find the correct one...

You know.... you just called up a damn month of clouds.
They'll be hanging around so you can't get any new pictures to try it out.

Yup, definitely sure. GBRG (0,1) gives colors reverse to what I would expect, i.e.: Ring Nebula is blue outside and red inside. A nice red outside and blue/cyan center with GRBG (1,0).

I've also done testing with ImagesPlus and the Bayer pattern that works correctly is "RGB Generic + (1,0) - GR,BG".

Deep Sky Stacker also gives the correct debayered image with GRGB (1,0).

ATIK's Artemis Capture (automatically) uses Bayer Offsets of (1,1) which gives the same color output as the above.

Now back to reprocessing a bunch of images!

Interesting....I would have thought that all Atik cameras would be consistent as there is no advantage to the arrays.

The following is how ImagesPlus groups ATIK cameras with the same Bayer pattern. I've tried all three and none of them work correctly with the Horizon...

I will be getting my ATKI Horizon tommorow afternoon and want to get the software setup before I go to the mountain Saturday night. Are there any updates I need to make to the generic installation??? Is there a video of the ATIK software I can watch???

Just download the Core Installation package from the ATIK website and install it.

The software manual is quite thorough (attached). I've never watched an ATIK video.

Real east to tell. Do a daytime shot with blue sky, greet trees and some foreground and then try the 4 available options. Only one will show the sky as blue and the trees as green.

Works well for an unmodded camera but not so great with a modded camera which leans towards red...

It still works. All you want is the sky being the closest to blue and the trees being closest to green. The other 3 choices will be so far off that there is no uncertainty. And I have used this method on a modded camera.

I could use some blue sky right now.
I'm about ready to move to Chili and set up shop in the Atacama desert....

You will need a much, much larger scope to hang out with that crowd!

Not if you and Brian come to visit and bring yours...

I wouldn't start packing anytime soon though, nor hold your breath...
