Shipping to Sigma...or anyone else.

I’m thinking of sending my lens and camera body to Sigma and let them do an inspection and the AF calibration.

Anyone have comments on their service and handling of said goods?

Is your particular Sigma lens usable with the Sigma dock to allow calibration? And/or does you camera body support MFA (micro focus adjustment)? Either method, if applicable, may be an alternative to shipping to get the AF calibrated unless your camera or lens needs service for other reasons.

I have the dock and have ran out of patience. LOL!

I’m using the lens with an original 7d. I can do a MFA but I would have to change the setting each time I changed lens. Also, it seems that the calibration goes from front to rear focus as the lens is extended out from 150mm to 600mm.

I was also thinking it would be nice to have recent documentation from Sigma saying the lens is in working order if I decide to sell.

Not trying to talk you out of sending it in, but you should know that the 7D allows you to store specific MFA corrections for many different lenses, and the camera recognizes that lens when it’s mounted and dials in that specific correction. It also allows you to set two corrections per lens at different FLs. Typically, you set one at the wide end and one at the tele end (150 and 600), but you can pick any two FLs that you like.

Now if you don’t have a good calibration system, then it can certainly be frustrating and non-productive, and if that’s your situation, then sending this to the manufacturer may be the best answer. There’s a great deal of discussion and difference of opinion on whether it’s better to send the combo in or use a cal system, so I won’t revisit that except to say that I use the FoCal system and cal all my lenses. I used it on my 7D and now on my 5D3, and it provides great results, making several lenses that were previously “soft”, tack sharp. Good luck whatever path you take.

Cheers

I sent both 7d and sigma 150-600 in and had it back in 7 days. They did a good job packaging on sending it back. I had problem with loose lens connection and they calibrated the lens. I'd send it in if I were you.
