No, Dian Fossey actually did go insane and pissed off some local Ugandans who machete'd her to death for kidnapping and torturing their kids. You didn't read the news back then or see the gruesome movie about the end of her life?
Here is some more recent news on the issue. I remember much of it from way back when it happened. As I recall do to her radical if not militant and irresponsible behavior the National Geographic Society pulled its funding and ended its association with her.
This is all very sad and unfortunate for the research she did on these wonderful close-to-human animals.
