Picture of a moth made in Kansas.
Made by my granddaughter with a cell phone. Anyone know the name of this moth? I do know that it mimicks an owl.
I’m pretty sure that is a Prometheus moth.
Who cares what it is , that’s one Bad Ass lookin moth ! Lol !
Or likely a Polyphemus Moth. Prometheus has stirrup shaped 'eye spots', with a solitary dark spot near the tip of the forewing. Poly has those remarkable clear windows in the second wings; how did Nature ever imagine these would be of survival value! Both of these moths belong to a large family, worldwide, called Saturnids, or even more properly, scientifically, Saturniids. The cocoons are woven of strong threads which could compete with the silk moths of the Orient, if we were inclined to unwrapped them. Luna and Cecropia moths are close relatives. Living in AZ but growing up in IA I miss encountering these spectacular 'denizens of the night', a treat for Midwesterners who delight in knowing their neighbors.
Great capture of one cool moth.
