Presumably, a horizontal green flash appears briefly just a the sun sets. Since I've never witnessed it personally (nor has my brother who lives there), I don't know if it's real, and wonder if just a good reason to get together with friends at sunset! If anyone knows, let me know--I'll look harder next visit.
I have witnessed many "green flashes" but always over the ocean. You need absolutely perfect weather, no clouds, no smog. Just as the sun goes below the horizon you can see the green flash. But, you cannot be staring at the sun or your eyes will be compromised. Look away and just keep looking until the moment arrives. It is very cool but I have no idea if it occurs over lakes. I have even been able to photograph it but not sure where in my files it may be. If I remember correctly I shot it when I was using film. If you are on an ocean cruise, be ready for sunset if the weather permits.
