After some thought, I realize that Ryan is simply running; making certain he is no longer a part of the hypocrisy, and trying to escape the upcoming bloodbath.
He is young, ambitious, and will try to come back as a savior in the not-to-distant future.
He is an opportunist; seizing the opportunity to save his future.
