My nephew just emailed me. He and his girlfriend have two trips planned this year...one to Iceland and the other to Africa. He wants a camera that's easy to carry around (not too heavy or big) and his budget is I'd say in the $300-$500 range. Something that I think would be good for taking pictures of nice views and a safari. I'm strictly a DSLR guy so I'd have him dragging a couple of bodies and about 4 lenses with him. But he's thinking of an "all in one" camera. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

He'll regret not taking a good camera maybe not soon but later.

Exactly! If I had two dream trips of a lifetime such as those, I would have two camera bags filled with gear!

My daughter just came back from Iceland, her 3rd trip in two years. She said that there is a lot of blowing ice/sand/water, need rain coats/sleeves for cameras and lenses. The photo ops are everywhere, a really sturdy tripod would help immensely. The weather is always foremost on your mind with most photo ops in low light so slow shutters. Why go on the trip of a lifetime and pinch on your camera money?? The pic is from Iceland.

Not necessarily bags filled with gear, but a decent Dx body and a wide angle to zoom lens would fit the bill. For $300, he can use his Smartphone. Friends who have gone on photo safaris with LONG lenses tell me it is sometimes difficult to maneuver that large piece of glass to get the Cheetah that is standing on the vehicle hood. For Iceland, a 28 mm minimum is a must to get the sweeping vistas.

just did 2 trips to South Africa for safari. Take a point and shoot with some zoom and enjoy the experience. You get close to most of the animals. I used a Nikon S8200 with a 14x zoom had fun and learned a lot.

Tell him to take a look at the Canon SX60 and the Nikon B700. The Panasonic FZ70 would be my 3rd choice if money is a major issue.

Here you go, and, it is in your price range. I use one and love the results. I put it in a belt pouch so it's out of the way until I need it.

Get a nice point and shoot. They do not seem to be into photography but just want to take pictures. So they need something simple to use and that will capture that kodak moment! The canon sx recommendations will fill the bill. I would add that they will need a parka for Iceland and walking shorts for Africa!

The problem in Africa will be dust. The bigger pro cameras are dust sealed. He needs to use care when changing lenses so as to not get dust on the sensor. he should know how to clean the sensor and take a cleaning kit with him.

Or maybe carry two body so they would not have to switch lens, that would be my direction, two camera one FF and one crop.

You are going to get a lot of technical body & lens advice, but do not forget the battery question. Some smaller cameras use ordinary AA batteries. Those will be more easily findable but puts a real crimp on camera options.
