Been there, done that - one of my favorite drives. First time was when I was about 10 with my folks. Don't remember exactly how husband and I got there in 2008, but we went from Durango to Montrose/Black Canyon of the Gunnison then west of mountain range to Granite, south of Leadville, then through Rocky Mtn NP on way back - lots of mountain pics on that trip, plus lots of miles. Hubby's idea of trip is to drive, drive, drive, look, drive drive drive, look, then drive some more. Lots of places to go back and take better pics now that I know more what I'm doing.

We're going on a month-long drive from Michigan to Dallas (to see son and bluebonnets) to Moab Utah for a week, then back home via Wisconsin. Already have plans through Moab part, but need to kill a week between there and Racine, Wisconsin - daughter graduating from college there. Any suggestions on stops more or less along the way would be appreciated.

Small car, no FWD, no long hikes.

At the start of your trip, I would definitely make a stop at the Wisconsin Dells. I have not been there since 1957, but I am sure the scenery and photo opportunities are still amazing even with all the growth in the touristy things that were prevalent then and I suspect now.

In central Wisconsin the Dalls offer some nice scenery. Some nice rock formations in that area.

Have you considered doing a hot-air balloon ride in Moab? I did it a few years ago, crossing Arches NP, and it was a hoot! (https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157630939382276/). On the same trip made a run through Telluride--Bridal Veil Falls is nice.

Here you go, Bridal Veil Falls and Ingram Falls. Same location.

I used to live in Wisconsin, so am familiar with the Dells, but it's been overrun by tourist traps. We found it hard to find a free place to see the river when we were there 30 years ago or so, can't imagine what it's like now.

Ooh, so tempted, but probably not. We're expecting cool weather. Beautiful pics, though. I was surprised to see that they had rides as early as March there! Maybe we'll see some balloons in the air!

If you go down the river on hy 35 in Wisconsin or on the Minnesota side through La Crosse down to pikes peak in Iowa just across the Wi. boarder. Great views of the river and eagles. Pikes peaks park has a high bluff view of the river. Then you can take hy 11 to Racine. You could also take hy 33 out of La Crosse to spring Green and stop at house on the rock. Wild cat mountain state park on hy 33 has good scenery. Live in Kenosha and like to travel back roads in Wisconsin a great deal.

I can find that easy to believe. Was there 50 some years ago. Oldest Daughter was born in Tomah.

Maybe we'll do a Wisconsin vacation next year. We never did do much up north there, just day trips from Milwaukee. We usually do one long trip then opt for shorter one the next year. Is the Merrimac ferry still running - as a kid we'd take it to go to Devil's Lake.

Oh...Devil's lake. We did boy scout camps out there every year. Had some quite adventurous times. I can't think of how many decades it's been - at least 4.

You take 191, main drag in Moab, straight north to Jackson Hole, WY (cute little town) keep heading north to Grand Teton NP (tone to see and photo with no long hikes). North from there is Yellowstone NP, you’ve been so you know the benefits. If you take 90 from north end of Yellowstone Devil’s Tower will be about 45-60 N before you get to South Dakota, Mt Rushmore will be about 60 min south near Rapid City, further east are the Badlands (nice drive thru the park west to east). That should give you plenty of options with lots to see, little walking, and leaving you wishing you had more time.

Perfect!! This advice will make your whole trip. Don't forget Crazy Horse Memorial near Mt. Rushmore.
