Never had this problem with any of my Nikons. As for the Canon suggestion, sounds good until something goes wrong with the Canon. That's like not flying on one airline because they lost your luggage untilit happens on that airline.
I haven't had that problem with mine. That said, I'll remember to make sure I close the door when charging the battery, even if I don't insert a fresh battery at the time. Open, I see how it could easily get knocked off.
As I've pointed out in previous posts, the battery door on my D500 is very flimsy -- not up to Nikon standards at all. It's very easy to knock off. When I lost my battery door, I covered the cavity with black electrical tape which worked fine but looked like a jury-rig. I eventually called Nikon. They quoted some outrageous price (over $100) to fix it. After negotiating with the lady on the phone, they agreed to do it for free (me being a long time registered Nikon owner and all)--but I still had to go through the inconvenience of sending it to them (they wouldn't just send me a replacement door). The actual piece can't cost more than a quarter, if that. It's the only design flaw I've found on the D500.
Nikon typically sells this part for it's cameras and they are avai;able on their site. My guess is that production has not been allocated for consumer consumption yet. I misplaced the battery power contact cover for my D500 shortly after purchase and was unable to purchase said part, but could send the camera in. I was able to get one via another method. My lack of care or failure to treat my camera properly will hopefully allow appropriate respondents to enjoy a private sexual experience.
Wow, A whole new reason to file away as support for buying Canon instead of Nikon! 🤔
HA! On the contrary, I hear lots of complaint at the camera stores...The reason you don't hear complaints here cause those who own swear they are the best and are embarrassed to say something when something goes wrong. LOL

Boy am I lucky, seven times. I own two D500's, D800, D810, and previous D7200, D7100, and d7000, ALL WITH THE SAME BATTERY DOOR. NO PROBLEMS WITH ANY OF THEM, just I am just darn lucky. Or maybe, I know what I'm doing.

Quite honestly this is totally unacceptable and with the price of this high touted camera. I had many, many Nikons and loved them all. I still have film versions in my closet that are tough and we'll made. I gave up with the D800 which i talked about a long time ago on this forum. I had trouble with card reading on D800. Their was a fault in the AF. And the 2 I owned were different didn't sound the same etc. And I bought them to do more video. The 850 has been reviewed and appears to be a great camera. The Sony a7r III a serious competitor is totally made of mag metal. The 850 is partial as I read. I think they were dealing with weight issues. I have thought the Sony battery doors on all my cameras were flimsy but they never came off. I have never had a Sony camcorder or mirrorless have a repair.

Yeah, I had an issue with the light switch on my BMW. Won't buy another one of those with their lack of quality control.
