We're going on a month-long drive from Michigan to Dallas (to see son and bluebonnets) to Moab Utah for a week, then back home via Wisconsin. Already have plans through Moab part, but need to kill a week between there and Racine, Wisconsin - daughter graduating from college there. Any suggestions on stops more or less along the way would be appreciated.

Small car, no FWD, no long hikes.

Have you been to the Tetons and Yellowstone? Southwestern Colorado - Durango-Sliverton area? (Both areas may be snowy in May...)

One of the most beautiful drives in the country is from Moab to Heber to Brigham City to Logan (via Sardine Canyon) to Utah State University through Logan Canyon to Bear Lake to Kemmerer Wyo, to Afton Star Valley to Jackson to Yellowstone. The scenery is gorgeous and ever changing. Early Spring has the advantage of low traffic.

Vail, CO and the Rocky Mountain NP should take care of that extra time.

Been to all but Tetons. Even went on the Durango-Silverton train. Tetons maybe - we want to go but depends on snow amounts.

I'll have to look at that route. That's one we haven't been on. Low traffic is appealing. Earliest we've ever traveled west was in mid-June, so this will be different.
And I looked - that would be doable, again depending on snow amounts. Farmer's Almanac is, of course, predicting lower than normal temps and maybe rain and snow while we're in Moab. Oh, well, the rocks will still be there. Maybe I won't need sunscreen or a CPL filter.

Closer toRacine the bluffs along the Mississippi (Lacross area) should be in full spring mode for landscapes, don't forget the Wind Point Lighthouse in Racine . Milwaukee is just a short drive north ,alot of Frank Lloyd Wright influence around town and the area, Holy Hill north of Milwaukee offers some cool shots also. Say hi when you're in Racine

You take 191, main drag in Moab, straight north to Jackson Hole, WY (cute little town) keep heading north to Grand Teton NP (tone to see and photo with no long hikes). North from there is Yellowstone NP, you’ve been so you know the benefits. If you take 90 from north end of Yellowstone Devil’s Tower will be about 45-60 N before you get to South Dakota, Mt Rushmore will be about 60 min south near Rapid City, further east are the Badlands (nice drive thru the park west to east). That should give you plenty of options with lots to see, little walking, and leaving you wishing you had more time.

Oshkosh would be a nice detour if you're not in a hurry. The Experimental Aircraft Association is located at the Wittman Regional Airport and has a world-class museum. They have a multi-level exhibition hall and a separate replica airport across the complex with flyable aircraft from the 20s and 30s. Been there several times. Also, if you go through Milwaukee, check out the Harley Davidson museum.

The Tetons and Yellowstone would get my vote. They are magical and May is when you'll see all the newborn bison, moose, etc. without the crowds. Do bring fleece so you can layer. We went to Yellowstone at about the same time and it snowed on our way from Jackson to Yellowstone. Do take the special photo tour in the antique yellow buses. Stay at the Jackson Lake Lodge and pull out your wallet for a room with a view, well worth it!

Totally concur. One of the best scenic roads in the US. Someone mentioned Vail, CO in this thread. Those of us who live in the Rocky Mountains call Vail, "the most expensive truck stop in the world." If you like your mountains on an interstate highway where you can smell the air and hear the roar of autos instead of a soothing mountain creek, Vail is where you want to be. However if you want to see the best Mountains in Colorado, spend your time in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride. You won't be sorry and you don't have to smell the air.
