It is a nonsense to use a f/1.4 lens at f/8 to get useable pictures. This lens will deliver sharp pictures even at f/1.4. But the OP is trying to get sharp pics at f/2.0 That is easy.

I have not seen any response to instructions about checking the camera firmware and upgrade to the latest version. The D750 is known to have misaligned focus points. That was corrected in firmware upgrade. It is also known to need fine tuning with this particular lens to get sharp results. And then there is the possibility of low contrast and larger focus points then indicated in the viewfinder disturbing the focus system. Some or all of those are the most likely causes of the problem the OP is facing. The problem will continue as long as those basic and obvious solutions are ignored.
I think the OP should carefully read the posts so ... (show quote)

Yep, heading to Cameratechs shop and taking all of my lenses with me!! Hope I don't have to take out a loan...

Okay, I have been working with the lens and have found that f2.0 is the widest I can go to get consistent tack sharp eyes. But I'm still going to check the calibration. This is from about 5 feet away and the eye on camera right is what I was aiming for and got it. Oops, it looks a bit dark on this post. Second one is about 10 feet away at f2.0

Glad you found an effective answer. With a fast lens, it’s often helpful to stop down just a little (assuming you have the light) for max sharpness, and to provide just a little more DOF and room for AF error without significantly affecting subject to background isolation or bokeh.

My old Nikon FM had a "split image" for focusing.
Of course it was manual focus, but it was always accurate.

I wish I had that feature on my digital cameras.

Anyway GR it looks to me like the focus is a bit close.

You could try something like this to confirm where
your focus actually is:
