I would open the shadows, take blue and red out of the midtones, and darken the highlights a bit. 8-)

It has the potential for a really nice photo. The subject is spot on. A little tweaking in post processing would really make the bird. It is a nice picture.

The bright water on the left is competing with the bird and would be nice to tone it down a bit also....
I think the composition is ok. It looks like you over-sharpened it somewhat.

Yes, I would also open the shadows which is going to reduce contrast so contrast will be needed after those shadow areas are open. I do that with Curves.
Yes, the image needs color correction, it is kind of blue.
I believe the highlights should not be darken. It will make them grayish.
