I’m just learning photography and I love it. I haven’t had too much time to practice but I always take photos of my grandkids in sports. High school age- hockey, football and baseball. Love it! Some come pretty good and some horrible! Lol. Going to the high school tonight for a choir concert. Going to take my new Canon lens 24-70 2.8 and a used Canon DSLR 6D camera. Hoping I can get something of worth! I know it doesn’t have a built in flash so I’m wondering if I should take my speed lite which I’ve used like 10 times! No clue how to really use that either! Yikes!!!
Hiya.
Yes, bring the Speedlight, but don't point it directly at the Choir, they'll look washed out. Since you don't have a lot of time, get a white business envelope and a rubber band.... Got them? Good.
Tilt the flash head up 90 deg and attach the envelope to the side of the flash facing the viewfinder. Leave the camera in Auto mode, or whatever Canon calls it, and try a few test shots. Light will bounce off the ceiling and illuminate the Choir without that "Deer in the Headlight" look of too much flash.
Welcome to UHH slind53, glad you joined us. How close will you be to the choir? If it is not powerful enough might not do you much good unless you are shooting in RAW with a PP program.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

Welcome to UHH. How did the choir images come out. The goal for flash is to have the light soft and diffused. Flash is harsh and gets tamed with a diffuser.
Worthwhile $19 investment for your flash unit if you are photographing people.

Hello, welcome to UHH.
I just went to one of my Grandson's musicals the other night. I did not want to use a flash as I felt it could be very distracting to the performers and audience around me. I took photos with both my 24-27mm, f2.8 and my 70-200mm f2.8 and set my camera to "Auto ISO" and was able to get some pretty good shots without the flash, you may want to try this. Good luck and happy shooting.
