Hello everyone. I'm looking to replace my ailing epson R800. Is any one familiar with the epson P400. It seems like a nice photo printer , but so big. I'm looking for one with pigment based ink not dye . I'd even consider a canon. I looked at the pixma pro 10 online but can't find one locally, but the that one is big too. My wife is ok price wise but not the size Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the pixma pro 10 and it is very large, but I think that will be the case with any prosumer level printer, epson or canon. I love the prints I get out of my canon, but it is also a slow printer. I have never used one of the good epson's, so I don't really have any idea about speed comparisons. The pro 10 can print up to 13x19 and some of the epsons can go 17x22.

I think the best you could purchase right now is the Epson P800 or the Canon Pixma Pro 1000. Both exceptional printers but costly to operate if you do a lot of printing. B+H has a rebate program on the Pro 10 right now: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893735-REG/Canon_6227b002_Pixma_Pro_10_Photo_Inkjet.html?sts=pi and you can refill the tanks on this printer as well as the Pro 1 and Pro 1000. You might want check out: http://precisioncolors.com/index.html. At this point I don't believe there is a refill option for the Epson P400 or P800. You also might want to check out Jose Rodriguez on YouTube to give you a better feel for each of the printers.

Thanks for the advise. I want to make this purchase at brick and mortar store. Alot fewer hassles if I have a problem.

I really don't think you will have any problems with B+H and, they are giving you a pack of paper worth $50.00 free as well as a $250.00 rebate. You probably won't get that at a brick and morter store. I purchased my Pro 100 from them without a hitch.

Why not go to the local brick and mortar camera store and buy what they like to support? The only one left anywhere I can drive features Canon over Epson.

the 6820 is only a 5 cart printer. If you are really looking at putting out good photographs at least look at the Pixma Pro 100. I know it's a dye based printer but I have never had a problem with fading on any format I've used to date as long as you take care of your photo's. the Pro 100 is 8 carts and comes with $50 worth of paper as well as a full set of inks and a $250 rebate. That combination makes the printer virtually free. The 100 also holds a lot more ink per cart so they will last a little longer. Yes it's a big machine but what you will get out of it is well worth the size difference. I have mine sitting on a separate small printer stand next to my desk. Holds my printer an all my paper. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893738-REG/Canon_6228b002_Pixma_Pro_100_Photo_Inkjet.html?sts=pi

You said you wanted pigment. The specs at B&H say the IX 6820 has one black pigment cartridge for crisp text. Yellow, Cyan, Magenta and another Black are "Chromalife100+" which is dye.

Depending on what size you want to print, I would strongly recommend the Canon Pixma Pro line. Either the Pro-10 or Pro-100. I went through 2 Epson printers before I purchased the Canon, which has been truckin along for 3 years. My suggestion on ink is to purchase a full set of replacements and replace as needed, since you never know what inks are going to run out when.
