Tamron 28-300mm lens for Alaska trip

Due to an already stressed back, I need to "lighten up" what I take on an Alaska cruise trip. I'm considering investing in a Tamron 28-300mm lens so I don't have to be carrying and switching lenses on my Canon 3Ti. Does anyone have an opinion on this lens, or if this would be a good all-around option?

The Tamron 16-300 or the Sigma 18-300 will give you some wide options - unless you are on full frame ....??

I use it on my Nikon D3000 and it does a great job, it was the only lens I used on my Alaska trip. Tried to keep packing to a minimum.

I like the Tamron lenses. I have the 18-270 on my D5500 and the 18-400 on my D500. The D5500 with the 18-270 is a smaller and lighter set up. I'd rather have the 18mm on the wide end because it gives you a better option for wider shots. The 28mm on a crop sensor gives you a 42mm full frame field of view which is very close to a normal view and not really very wide at all. The wider angle of view with the 18mm is more useful for me . . . .

I have the Sigma 18-250 for my Canon T7I. Works great!

AK Grandpa, I trust that you know how to take good photos in Alaska :) I'll bet I'd also like the wider angle of view option. I haven't found the 18-270 lens with an EF-S mount. Will that matter? My Canon T3i uses EF-S, but I can also use EF, yes?

Any EF or EF-S lens will fit your camera - it just doesn't work the other way around - you can't use an EF-S lens on a full-frame camera.

I have the late model one with pzd and all that. It is a good lens. It would be OK on your T3i but as already suggested, if your going to spend the money go for something with 18 on the low end for your crop sensor. You may not need it in Alaska but you'll probably use it in close quarters somewhere. IMHO :-)

Do some research on the Tamron lens 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 DI II VC HLD model BO28 (APS-C format) weight 25 oz. ~ 1 1/2 lbs.). Came out June 20 '17. This is the first 22.2X zoom lens.

I have a late model Tamron 28-300 and used it on my full frame Canon 5D III with great results on a Danube River Cruise this past summer. With a camera that has the ability to shoot at high ISO the lens was fine, even in cathedrals where flash wasn't allowed.

300mm is not enough for Alaska. If you have a bad back, and don't want to fumble around changing lenses then you need a long zoom bridge camera. There are plenty of them out there made by Canon, Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic. I have owned a Canon SX50 it is roughly 24-1200mm barely a few pounds. It has been replaced by the Canon SX60. The Nikon gives you more zoom but it is much bigger and heavier. Panasonic can be had with Leica lens. The Sony HX400 comes with a Zeiss lens. My SX50 has died and I will be replacing it with the Sony HX400. Try one out at your local camera store. I think you will be pleased...all of the fine long zoom cameras cost less than the Tamron 28-300mm and you will have a second camera vs just another lens in your camera bag. Note: all of thes long zoom cameras are quite well sealed for protection from rain and dust. You will never have to clean the sensor, or change lenses. Be sure and get a spare battery. Have a great trip

Hello "disi". When I got my first camera (a 35mm film, back in the 70s) I was surprised to find that I used a wide angle more than tele. Since you have a crop frame camera, I suspect you need more on the wide side. 28 X 1.6 = 44.8 effective fl, essentially a normal fl. I have an 18-300 I use on my 80D and a 18-250 on my T2i. I sometimes find the 18 end not wide enough.

I would go for the 18-300 of Sigma or 18-270 of Tamron. If you can afford to, consider the Tamron 18-400.

Reviews are outstanding on the Tamron 18-400, might be your best option if you're willing to purchase a new quality lens.
