I see from other posts you have already learned the good and bad about UHH. Wealth of knowledge here, but you have to sift thru the cranky jerks like rjwallace. Here's my advice.
Browse the links and resources section. Read all you can about any subject that interests you, then go out and try to replicate that photography with your own camera. Compare your results to what you thought you would get. Analyze why you may have missed the mark (you will early on).
Pretty soon, you will start to shoot things instinctively as your knowledge base grows and begin to focus more on composition, light, etc.
The basics of exposure is the foundation for getting the camera to reproduce what your eye sees. Shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Everything evolves from there. Lens choices, framing, light, etc.
Last, but not least, there is no substitute for practice. This is a game of trial and error. It is the only way to get better!

What an insulting response.
If you don’t want to help someone then don’t post.
I agree, we should all remember we had to start somewhere ourselves. We who post here should be kind, respectful and helpful, or leave.

As a next step start selecting aperture/shutter settings that you think will give the proper results.
This is where it will start coming together.

Amen to that.
The beauty of today is that thousands of shots can be taken for the price of a memory card.
In the past the film and d velopment cost could become prohibitive quickly ... yet we see so few who believe learned skills are more important than throwing money at new equipment.

What an insulting question! You want us to teach you everything about the subject “photography”? You don’t have a large enough memory card or hard drive to record all our answers. Step one - find the shutter release on your camera and press down on it. When you have a more specific question, come back and ask it. Until then, stick with something less challenging like shoveling snow.
You misunderstood the OP request. He asked for any advice you would give and you can give little or nothing. There will be many responses to this with comments but won't be too much. All about photography is too much but the OP ask for only those you would give and in your case which is none so the total won't be all that much.

Read everything you can get your hands on about photography and the elements of art (including your camera and software manuals), watch videos if that is your most beneficial way to learn, take classes, go on photography tours to photography all types of subjects, ask questions, and set goals, monthly or yearly, depending on your schedule. By setting goals to are directed and focused on learning and completing a task. Your first goal could be to learn what ISO, aperture and shutter priority are and what they do when you use them. Then move on from there. Waite down your yearly goals and then fill in the blanks as to how you will meet them, this will keep you directed. Learning photography takes time and practice so just keep at it.
Jesus rjaywallace. He's asking for advice. No need to be shitty.
Take whatever classes you can find. Trying to teach yourself can be time consuming and inefficient especially as you are getting started.
Pretty harsh, man. This is someone asking for advice, not your entire history of photography. Be kind, karma does exist.

Buy "(your camera model} For Dummies", and read it.

Yours is the insulting post. If you do not wish to participate, simply do not and keep negativity to yourself, it suits you well.

Uncalled for commentary gets everyone nowhere... Oh, BTW, "shoveling" (sic) is spelt shovelling.

You are getting a lot of good advice except for one angry poster. Your question is very important and that is what this forum is about.
I said this recently look at the manual in front pages it shows basically how to setup camera battery and card etc.
Then put the camera in automatic ands start shooting pictures. Friends, kids, scenes things in your house. Sometimes
things in your house might be interesting. Enjoy yourself it is about taking pictures. Playback and enjoy what you did.
I said this about an article in a photo magazine about an upcoming young lady star who when asked what to do
and she said 2 words period "just shoot."
Tom;
you nailed it right on the head.
