Actually, such areas often are teeming with wildlife. Wherever there's a water source birds and mammals will abound. Hawks, eagles, ravens, magpies, etc. Mice, squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, deer, elk, etc. But yes it's a hard life for us humans with scarce water and extremes of weather. It might grow on you if you spent some time in such an area. Give a whirl some time.
