I did some testing before I went digital ten years ago. I found that a 3000x2000 {6mp} image gave me the quality I'd been getting from 35mm Kodachrome. After that, it depends on how much cropping you want to have have available.
Personally, I believe that anything beyond 24mp APS, 36 mp FF, is straining the ability of modern electronics.
I agree on the “6”, still get great 11x27, from 6meg Fuji s3pro, D40, don’t use them any more just because I went micro 4/3
