The choices are a 70-300 in mint condition from Roberts (370$) or a refurb from Nikon (400$).

Greentoe.com is the place to buy either.

Get the refurb. You have a 90 day warranty and you KNOW its a USA product. Used lenses could easily be grey market.

You can get a refurbished AF-P 70-300mm without VR for $179 from B&H. This lens is for DX cameras only. 90 day warranty. And be certain your camera's firmware is current for this lens. The prices you quoted are most likely the ones with VR. Regardless, if you get VR or not. Refurbished is the best choice.

You want a VR version regardless of where you purchase.

The question is, which 70-300? There are several.

I purchased an af-s 4-5.6 70-300 g VR ED IF in "excellent" condition on Tuesday. It will arrive today.

Be aware that there are currently 5 models of the 70-300mm in the Nikor line.
Differences in apertures and availability of switches (af/mf, VR on/off) Price difference of new runs from +/-$200 to +/- $800. Refurb and used prices drop from there.

I'll post here tonight after I get the lens and get a chance to play a bit.

I am buying the AF-S VR IED. My question is about the preferred vendor for a lens that is considered “mint” by one vendor and “refurbished” by another.

Does Roberts provide a warranty?

Make sure you’re comparing the same model lens. Also look at KEH. They are having a sale today 10% off lenses.
BTW I thought Roberts was expensive for what I saw in used lenses.

Buy the very same refurb from Cameta Camera (www.cameta.com) and you get a full year warranty
