When the day comes, that all your DSLRs, lenses, and other Gear, can only be transported by the general luggage check-in section. That's when I'll be taking only my Bridge and pocket cameras. Have you seen how baggage employees toss your bags, sometimes landing on concrete? And theft possibilities too. And I don't own a D850 either. Along with other very expensive lenses.

I don't know if this will pertain to anyone, but I am excited! Last night I found new ways to control my camera! My camera is a Sony DSC-HX400v, the new way is through the mode dial, it consists of using the numbers on the mode dial. This will allow you into the creative features of the camera ie. standard, vivid, posterize etc. I'm very excited, it's like a new camera...Julian

Well, it certainly doesn't pertain to the subject of this thread.

When we were in Spain last summer We waited in the security line for 40 minutes. Once through the security line I was singled out and a security employee escorted me to the security area and examined my camera bag. The security employee was very courteous and told me it would only delay my boarding by ten minutes. She checked my camera bag and she ensured me all was well and was on my way toward my gate. She even hailed a airport shuttle for me and I was at my gate before my family arrived. I don't know if they were only singling out only certain people with a camera bag or all the travelers. However, the security area was rather quiet when I was there so it looked like that they singled out only certain passengers.

Off the topic. Something, that only concerns you.

Just returned to U.S. from Costa Rica bird shoot via LAX for connecting flight to Hawaii and was very surprised to have my bags singled out from the scanner by a TSA agent calling out "photography equipment"! I had 3 Nikon bodies and 4 lenses in my camera back pack and they took the pack to an inspection table and took all bodies and lenses out examining each one in detail. Even had to remove caps from both ends of the lenses so they could "see if they can see light through them". My question to traveling Hogs is has anyone else traveling recently through U.S. airports been subjected to this time consuming and detailed exam? Is it part of the new "getting tougher on security" policy announced late last year or have I just been lucky before not to have encountered such a probing inspection?

I have been singled out once, but I am grateful that the TSA is doing their job for all of us and I always thank them for keeping us safe!

Relax! You should like having people be as sure as they can that nothing bad is on your flight. Nobody is picking on you. Smile and say "Thank you for being thorough!" You have not been invaded.

Exactly. I did thank them when TSA found that I had accidently left 7 ACP .45 rounds in my suitcase and their scanner found them. The rounds were trapped between the cardboard bottom and the bottom of the carry-on bag. I didn't see them when I was packing for the Galapagos Islands. Yes, we were detained for about an hour and were worried that we might not make the flight, but they did their jobs and checked out records.

That's the problem we are all "just getting used to it" out of fear and government control is really not the answer.

So would you be comfortable boarding a flight where people could bring whatever they wanted onboard?

Daytona Fla to NY. 10/2017 one agent took every piece out of my camera bag. right down to the 1 oz of bug spray. rubbed everything with some fancy little paper that detects explosives I guess. She was great very very careful. but would not let me closer than 3 feet. once done she asked if I wanted to reassemble or could she. Cudos to her ! as this was going on another agent was going thru my carryon like a 4 year old opening presents at Christmas. I told him the tripod is on the bottom. I took one step forward, still 3-4 feet away, he froze and said very loudly for all to hear !! step back now !! than looked at another agent with the firearm. I looked at the agent still doing my camera bag and she was rolling hers eyes. lol No complaints from me. Makes me feel a little safer.

A terrorist could pack enough C4 into a 500mm lens to take down your airplane. I'm glad to hear TSA is being thorough. I agree with what someone said above, you were carrying way more gear than most travelers. It probably called attention to you. But then, I was pulled out of line 10 years ago as we were departing Dublin, Ireland, for no reason. I wasn't even carrying a DSLR. Just my suitcase. Sometimes they pick every so many people in line randomly to search. It's just part of the world we live in thanks to evil people who want to kill us.

I found that if you pack a travel tripod in your carry on, and you are going to Mexico, that's fine. It's considered a weapon when you leave Mexico, and you have to check it.
That was a pain after going through the security line. Different things you need to know. I wish it was consistent, but every country has their own rules.

I haven't traveled to Mexico but I did strap my monopod, which doubles as the leg of my tripod, to my camera bag. Nobody said a word about it. I've done it on a trip to Costa Rico and on domestic flights. It would make a pretty effective club but I guess TSA isn't worried about that. But they do take away pen knives. Go figure.

So far as I understand randomness is part of the procedure to make it harder for the bad guys to predict and circumvent the system. I don't have global entry, - which helps at the returning to USA end - but TSA Pre really helps in getting through security at this end. Last time I went to Paris from SFO with cameras and only carry on luggage which included my GorillaPod with ballhead, I could print out my boarding pass at home, arrived at SFO and was through security and sitting in the bar - mexican breakfast and a margarita or few - 10 minutes later.

It certainly didn't hurt that I had United Premier Platinum status and TSA Pre, but that doesn't always help. The randomness approach means that you can always be pulled aside, different practices at different airports and inconsistent practices at each airport are also a good thing.

I don't know how many of you remember Pan Am 103 (12/21/1988), but I very nearly flew on that aircraft and cancelled at the last minute. I also saw the very big hole in the ground at Lockerbie. It informed my perspective. Shortly after that I was flying from London Heathrow to the USA, and while checking baggage got asked about something in my luggage, so answered and said check anything that you wish. No problem. A guy at the next podium got very upset about something similar, and was asked to step aside. Within a few seconds he was surrounded by six very large British policemen armed with sub machine guns. He was politely asked "What appears to be the problem, Sir?" He went very quiet after that.

When returning from Greece in June we had a plane change in Turkey and we went through 5 more screenings where they took my camera bodies, iPads and headsets 🙄. Not a happy flight. The only electronics we could keep was a cell phone.

Has you checked to see if there are any security rating for Costa Rica? It may have nothing to do with photographers. Have you thought what one lense loaded with C4 between the front and rear elements could do to a plane?
