Not yet,,,I have just ordered a new arca swiss type ball head.

Keep in mind that you may have to accommodate big lens feet or tilt heads as well.

You've all got me interested in having an L bracket.
If I purchase only one, lets say it's designed for a D850,
would it also work good for a D800 and D500?

Thanks for helping me.

No. Check for applicability for each unit. Also, as mentioned previously, you will have to be arca-swiss compatible for attaching it to ball heads, etc.

Stay away from Manfrotto with its proprietary clamp. I had the most heavy duty Manfrotto Ball Head and converted it to ARCA.

Purchased inexpensive Sunway ARCA clamp fittings / plates for all of my Quantum lights for quick changeover on stands tripods etc. Ever tried to screw those top heavy lights to a stand stem screw?

My slider, GlideCam, Jib, and DJI Ronin stabilizer all have ARCA universal clamps allowing me to quickly mount and dismount my cameras to any of them. If you have experienced the pain of using various size Allen wrenches to remove all the odd ball clamps and acceptance plates you will appreciate the ARCA system employed. Quick change over is a breeze.

It might be usable
In the same series say 800s. I use the RRS base and L on my Canon 1D MkIII even though it is designed for the 1Dx MkII. The bases fit fine but the attachable l portion is designed to clear the openings on the left side of the body. Those can vary within the series. I want the newer base plate as it has the QR hole that the actual base for the 1D MkIII doesn’t have. Buy from a place like B&H and you have 30 days to return if not happy.

My daughter is using a D300 bracket on a d500 and claims it works. I doubt it, however. Brackets are designed to the exact shape of the camera so it "locks on" to align perfectly in three dimensions. No to mention they have matching cutouts to give you access to connections on the left (from the back) side of the camera. They are works of precision that makes any good tool a pleasure to use.

"L" brackets? Love 'em, but I'm too cheap to buy one, I made my own. Went to my local aluminum supplier in Miami, Simmons and purchased a 1/4" thick, I think it's called 'box girder' approx.
6"x4". Had Simmons cut a slice about 2 1/4". From that slice I got two "L" brackets. Drilled holes in each end, threaded the end that goes on the tripod,(1/4 20) and as they in England "Bob's your Uncle". I had the two "L"s. If I remember correctly there were two options of girders available, one name escapes me, the which I opted for is called 'architectural', the inside margins of the box is very precise rather than rounded. Oh, what did Simmons charge? It's been 25years or so, but was not much, they charge by weight, cutting is free. Great people.

You can't beat an L bracket.

Is one required absolutely not. Neither is a camera strap,,,,

If you use a battery grip "L " brackets won't work.

Of course they do. You need to buy the ones made for the battery grip. Jeez.

I gave up using a camera strap probably about 10 years ago.

It was always getting in the way or catching on things. The camera with a moderately long lens was always hitting things as I walked past them.

I tried wrapping it around my wrist and holding it in my hand. It was always coming loose and wrapped around my hand was restricting movement.

I tried several wrist straps but they were also restrictive. Some of them would not let me reach some of the controls.

I finally just took all the straps off and held it in my hand bare. Works just fine. I can carry it all day, although sometimes I have to use my right hand for something else. I just stick the lens into the crook of my left elbow.

I checked out the prices for the kirk and rrs and they are really pricey. So I purchased a lower price one. I won't be using it all the time.

What camera? I've sold off several Nikons and still have the RRS L brackets. Let me know if you're interested. Will sell cheap.

Well, the only two I could find are for the D810 and a D7100. The latter is a two-piece.

Not correct in all cases. RRS makes an L bracket for the Canon 5D series with a battery grip.
