Which of the Nikon 70-300 lenses would be most appropriate for my D7200? I am a “casual” photographer of landscapes and nature.

The AF-S 70-300mm VR would be your best option.

I agree with the MT Shooter, The AF-S 70-300mm VR is a really good lens and I've seen them used in perfect shape for under $200. The 55-300 has more range and is sharp but the auto-focus is slow. The The AF-S 70-300mm VR will also work on FF if you ever change to the larger sensor.

I agree with you. After research we got my wife a Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens. As i recall it was a little less than $500 new. I like the warrantee provided by Nikon. It is used with a D3100, D80 and D200. She really likes it a lot and is still learning how to use it. I am attaching a photo she took last month on the east coast of Florida at Gamble Rogers State Park. Taken with this lens on a D3100. Hand held and picture is straight out of camera.

I have an AF-S 70-300 VR and i really like the lens. It is best at f/8 to f/10 on the long end ... i try and keep it below 270mm for the sharpest images, but it is genuinely a good, inexpensive lens. I would recommend avoiding the AF-P 70-300...it is a DX lens... I also have one of those and I do not find it as sharp as the AF-S. I bought my AF-S used from KEH. Enjoy it! (nice shot by the way).

I have the Tamron 70-300 VC, and chose it over the Nikon . Both lenses tested very comparable, but the Tamron can be had for around $350 USD..a real bargain with incredible vibration control!

Get the VR. Any lens over 100mm becomes difficult to hold steady, the VR will help this dramatically. It will come down to "getting the shot" or "missing the shot". I have VR on my 70-200mm, huge difference from the days of my 80-200mm that did not have VR

I have found that the Kenko 1.4 teleconverter works very well with the AF-S 70-300 VR. You lose 1 fstop, so it is best with good light.

There are two 70-300 mm AF-P lenses. One is DX and one is FF- the faster one is FF and about 750.00 and is excellent.

I agree. Especially sharp at the long end!

Tayho... do you know the model number of the Kenko TC? I'd like to do some research on that and it's capability with my camera (D7100). The Teleplus Pro 300 1.4X DGX is not listing the AF-S 70-300 as compatable... additionally, it requires that the VR assistance be disabled prior to use.

I have the Teleplus Pro 300 1.4 DGX. I have not encountered any compatability issues. Auto Focus and Metering work the same with it attached(other than the loss of an fstop which can effect focus in low light).

I typically use a tripod, since with my D7200 the effective telephoto is 630mm at the maximum 300mm setting on the lens. So I haven’t experienced using VR while using the teleconverter.

Here is a link to an older PDF compatability table.

Hope this helps
