I do not think I would bother answering. As comedian Ron White claims - "you can't fix stupid". lol

Let me get this straight. She pays for skates, socks, pants, a cup, team jersey, helmet, shield, gloves, travel, ice time all of which make Hockey one of the more expensive amateur sports and balks at the cost of 2 Lattes. Now that’s some kind of messed up sense of entitlement.

I would tell her you are under no obligation to purchase picture but if you do want one there will be a charge. You really don’t need to explain anything to her, period.

Sorry if wasn't clear.
I have no problem charging her for the photos. I just felt that getting into "public places", Jack Nicholson at Laker games, copyrights etc. was taking it too far.
Several years ago, I put together a book dedicated to the Seniors on my son's State Championship hs soccer team. I did it as a keepsake for my son but a few parents expressed an interest so I told them how they could order it. Some did, some didn't. I didn't take any money from them but I did receive some nice bottles of wine😊

I agree with the people who would respond that she doesn't have to pay for a photo of her child and she could take it herself. Practice the answer over and over (for future questions), give it in a flat, matter of fact, tone. Don't inflect your voice in any way. This is an FHI (for her information) answer and should be communicated that way.

I think that parents should take there own photos with the cameras and phones they own. $15.00 is a real bargain. I have parents who won't pay $7.99 for a digital. No kidding they will steal shots from my web page. I guess they call it a screen shot. They have my logo right in the middle and another logo along the bottom of the picture, they still steal it. Go figure.

Jaackil: br Sorry if wasn't clear. br I have no p... (show quote)

You have lost me now. When you reply to a comment it is helpful if you quote the comment you are replying to to add some context. My replies to you was about Aunt Susie. When I brought up Jack Nicholson at lakers games that was in response to someone commenting and it could have been you I do not remember but that was about the question of model releases and pictures in public places which I did not bring up just responded to.

If we're going to get into the copyright area, be prepared to produce a release signed by the subject if 18 or over, or his/her legal guardian if a minor. Bet you don't have it. And I don't blame you for not getting it. I don't do that either. But I'd steer clear of legal arguments.

This was never about copyrights or signed releases the Philadelphia lawyers brought it up. But please tell me why I need a signed release from either the parents or players? I have the right to take pictures in a public place of people in a public place I also have the full right to do with those image what I want which includes selling them for a profit. The only time I need a release regardless of the subject or their age is if I am using their image for a comericial purpose defined by, to advertise or promote a business, service or event. Do not over complicate it. And for those who say it varies by locality I am talking about in the United States that is the law affirmed by the DOJ on many occasions. Federal law superceeds local laws and statutes. Every photographer should know this.

I believe you have the answer in your discussion of the problem. Explained to the mother the costs involved and that while you are providing posters for the seniors you are charging for additional photos as a way of recovering your expenses. I hope that helps, but I’m aware the some parents will never get it.

In your post you say you have done this many years. that being said all the players parents are aware of what you do and don't charge for . As for all this talk about model release some how all players were invited to the photo shoot that parents delivered there kids too sounds like parental consent to me . My reply would be to give you copies of your son's photo's would be unfair to all that have paid seeing how it's clear what i give as a gift and what i charge for to cover my expenses

Never looked at the cost being an expense... just provided digital images as a friendly gesture. I did not consider taking pictures as a 'business'.
