For traveling, the big zoom range lenses are hard to beat. In the past I carried two bodies, five lenses. My bag weighted thirty seven pounds. It would not be legal on airlines today. The big plus is you seldom miss a shot changing lenses.

Would the Tamron 18-400 work (settings etc.) on a Nikon DSLR-4100?

I think your camera and lens combo are working very well together and I also believe you yourself are very knowledgeable of your equipment, which only proves one can have the best of the best, but without the knowledge of the equipment the results will be poor.
