Clyde Butcher

Our daughter took my wife and I to the Clyde Butcher lecture at the Venice Preforming Arts Center, Venice, Florida. Then this morning we visited his studio in Venice.

His black and white photos are mind blowing. I guess thats why they call him the Ansel Adams of the Everglades.

He had a stroke in 2017 and is wheelchair bound. At 75 it may be hard for him to get back to work. We can hope.

What did he talk about? Composition? DarkRoom methodology? Inspiration for individual pictures? Etc?

Even in a wheelchair Clyde has gotten back out in the Everglades and continues to photograph, now mostly digital. He said he has gotten to old to carry around his medium format (8x10) camera and gear! He is a really good photographer and I am glad to call him my friend.

The 8X10 and tripod weighed over 65# but he would setup and wait 4 or 5 hours in 3 or 4 foot deep water until he had just the right light for his shot. He has a home and studio in the Everglades and offers swamp walks several times a year. His studio and darkroom up in Venice Florida has a small gallery and he has a couple open houses every year which are fun and educational to attend.

My parents winter in Venice. They sent me a brochure of Clyde Butcher's museum, but I haven't gone there. It's been several years since I've been down to visit...I only have 5 days off for spring break (monitor for school bus). I think the last time I was down there we went up to the Cape and saw the space shuttle launch. My dad volunteers at the Venice Theater

For sure! His shop on Alligator Alley is a definite stop whenever we're in that area. Take a general-admission swamp boat tour while you're in the area and you'll see where he gets such great shots. A private hire will get you the opportunity to perhaps emulate his work (as well as empty your wallet and make you deaf)!

If you can't get to southern FLA, he has a great web site.

He is back to work. Using digital rather than his large format cameras.

Not what I expected. Expecting a lecture on ecology. Got a very interesting biography. Truely a gentleman. Went to his studio Saturday morning and of course had to by another photo. After signing he always takes a couple minutes to talk with you. One day I was lucky and had 30 minutes with him.
