Before you leave Reno and Sparks, be sure to drive down 4th street going east. There are some truly great 1940's neon motel signs along 4th street which years ago was Hiway 40 - the main road through town and Nevada.

Heading east on I-80 out of Reno-Sparks, 30 miles out you will see the exit for Wadsworth. Very tiny town that was the staging area for the Central Pacific as it crossed Nevada. Watch on your left side for a magnificent black steel bridge crossing the Truckee River. It is a classic in the trees and it is massive!

On the way to Winnemucca, Lovelock is your typical 1950's town that never transitioned. Good "old USA" shots.

Farther East on I-80, take the Imlay exit and take some shots of Thunder Mountain. It is right next to the freeway on the right side going East. This was built many years ago by an American Indian and eventually abandoned. Careful because this can quickly eat up two hours of your time. It's all old and bleached out by the sun.

Well . . . if you want the "old west", then, as you are on I-80 heading East for Winnemucca, you will encounter a sign that says Mill City and Unionville. It's a paved road. Unionville is the old west. Old buildings, beautiful creek, mining implements, old homes, school, church and no tourists. I mean zip. This is the real deal. You won't see any other pictures like you'll get in Unionville. Strangers and tourists are rare so expect to see a few heads peering out the windows at you! :)

In Winnemucca down by the winding Humboldt river, there is a legal Red Light district that is great for exterior photos and signage.

On the west end of Winnemucca is the PIG. Greatest BBQ and very friendly people. We hit is every time we are in town. Right next to the street.

Always be on the lookout for cemeteries. Many in Nevada have the original wooden headboards. They survive because Nevada has such low humidity that nothing organic can rot.

Have fun!

All of the other suggestions are valid but since you have identified yourself as "car guy" I am going to highly recommend The National Car Museum which has a fantastic collection of antique and modern automobiles with some of them in authentic settings for their time period. The museum is open from 9:30 to 5:30 Monday through Saturday and from 10:00 to 4:00 on Sunday. If you are at all interested in cars, don't miss this!

If you are a "car guy", one of the best car museums in the U.S. is located in Reno. It is called the National Car Museum and has hundreds of antique and modern cars and if you love automobiles, don't miss this!

No one mentioned the strip at night. It's not Vegas but the glittering lights of the casino hotels are something to see at night. This is not my photograph. Credit goes to wingworldmagazine.com.

I lived in Reno from 1985 to 1991 and went to Shooting the West in 1990 and 1991. It was a fun and educational event. I am glad the event is still going. You will enjoy it. I saw several big name photogs, including William Albert Allard and Annie Griffiths Belt, show and discuss their work. It was all slide film back then. (I sure miss the good old days.) Be sure to eat at the Basque restaurant when in Winnemucca. As for photo ops in the Reno area, downtown Reno is great if you do street photography. Virginia City, Dayton, Minden, and Gardernville are also interesting and a bit off the beaten path. Lake Tahoe is great for scenics but it is hard to find shots that are not cliche. There are also some interesting towns between Reno and Winnemucca that are pretty much the last bastion of the wild west. Don't forget Winnemuccca itself. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

You are welcome. I would add to my list Pyramid Lake (which I know was mentioned at least once above.) It is a fascinating desert lake, which, unlike Lake Tahoe, is not photographed all that much. To get there, take the Pyramid Highway east out of Sparks, Nevada (just east of Reno.) If you go during the week, do not be surprised if you are the only one there.

Encourage you to walk downtown Reno where with some exploring you'll easily find old buildings and neat scenes. If you head south to Washoe Valley, stay off the freeway and discover some great scenes.
