Beginner trying to get the shots on a cloudy day.

Thank you,i dont know how the trees can grow,but they do.thats what made me stop and take the photo.

top shot: Very good composition and the subject and river are nicely exposed. The sky is not giving much to work with but there is some cloud detail that could be captured. Things you can do:
Use a graduated filter in post to darken the sky and bring out some contrast and shadows.
Bracketing and then hdr in post to darken and bring out sky detail without underexposing the subject.
Shoot raw for all the above.
Bottom shot: Not much sky anyway. The distracting branches on the right side don't add much to the image and should have be cropped or cloned out
Sometimes these days are very good because you don't get harsh shadows on your subject like you might get on a sunny day.
