If you are using a PC, there is a lightweight program that handles basic editing needs very well. It is called Paint.net. If you need more sophisticated tools, there are free plugins for this program. I have used it for years and it is surprisingly versatile.

I use LightRoom but still return to ELEMENTS for some of the editing.
There is a ton of YouTube videos - probably for all of the suggested
editing programs. Why don't you look at a few from each editing program
that explain the particular editing that you like to do.
Compare the methods that each program uses and choose the one that you like the most.

Can you tell me, and perhaps the OP as well, whether Elements has a photo management tool as well as editing ability? Programs that do not have one confuse me for some reason. Just wondering.

I suggest you look into OnOne PhotoRaw 2018. For $130, it seems to be the most capable of the Adobe substitutes (along with Affinity). Alternatively, Luminar is a very powerful program with $10 discount coupons that let you purchase it for $59. Both have trial versions so you can see how you like them.

I'm color blind also. I use PhotoScapeX and it works very well for me. It can be used accurately with 3 or 4 clicks or you can REALLY get into serious editing. Here are a couple of sites for you, Enjoy. Be sure to select Mac/or Windows. Get the free version first, it never expires, and you can always upgrade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWC-SAuYOzw&t=325s Instruction and download info.

As a rank amateur I am more than perplexed about processing software for photos. I only shoot jpg and have used Picasa for years. Color blindness and Raw dont mix well!
Given Picasa’s demise . . I’m lost. Where might I go next? I surely do not wish to pay $120/year to rent LR. My editing interests are simple. Would appreciate your suggestions.
I use an Fuji XE2S.
Thank you.

I know little about it, but I get ads for Luminar (I think they just changed the name to Skylum) which you can try for free.

Used Elements (15) and now using Luminar...really like it, meets my requirements and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg or require a perpetual license. Select a program for your personal needs since many of the programs out there will/may have more capabilities than you'll even need

I'm an Adobe addict and, until you posted, didn't know there was a Adobe Photoshop Express version for a PC. There is. It's free. I downloaded/installed it and am impressed with the variety and quality of the tools!

Thanks!

Same here! Well, actually I'm not an Adobe addict, but I had never tried, or even heard of, Adobe Photoshop Express for a PC. I just downloaded it - easy peasy - and took a quick look. It looks easy. I'll be checking it out further. Thanks.

Paint Shop Pro is quite reasonable when it's on sale, which is frequently, no need to update every year, does almost everything, in fact I've never come across anything it couldn't do, I have had to learn how to do things and sometimes my old brain takes a bit of practice but it gets everything I need done.

Since you shoot strictly jpeg, why would you need post processing software, since your camera already processed it for you? For the occasional cropping and minor tone adjustment, any free processing software will do the job. I would think your current copy of Picassa would do just fine, for years to come. Until you plan to take your photography to the next level.

Yes, it’s called Organizer. Not nearly the power of Luightroom, but it can organize and allow browsing of images.
