Thanks for your informative reply. The camera in question was actually one I've given to one of my students to use and when I got together with her I checked everything out, activated the auto sensor cleaner on the D300, did a test shot and VOILA! nothing appeared, even when downloading to look at in Lightroom. And the "smudge" she said was on her shots looked more like the sample you used. Probably a dust bunny.....anyway, problem solved. But your response was very much appreciated. Glad you solved it. Now, buy a rocket blower and clean your sensor periodically. Don't touch the sensor though.
