Which of the Nikon lenses are sharpest throughout their full range, the 55-300 dx af g vr lens of the equivalent 70-300 lens?

There are several iterations of the 70-300. Which are you referring to?

I don't believe the 55-300 is referred to as sharp...mine surely was not. Some 70-300's are quite acceptable.

There are so many of them, but I am looking at the lower cost versions with VR I think that they are both f4.5-5.6 G dx autofocus swm lenses.

Don't exclude the Tamron 18-400. Much better than the 55-300 I discarded. Just my opinion. I bought the 55-300 when I started because it was cheaper.

There are a few versions of the Nikon 70-300mm. DX and FX. There are two models of the DX AF-P, one with and without VR. I would choose the newer DX AF-P 70-300mm with VR. But, your camera must have a firmware update, to accommodate the AF-P Series lenses. l own the AF-P 70-300mm, and love it. But I'm expecting to purchase a Tamron 18-400mm, which has become very popular among uhh members. The Nikon 55-300mm lens, I'm guessing, is an extension of Nikon's 18-55mm kit lens. A lens I own too. I don't know anything about the 55-300mm.

I had the 55 - 200 lens, I wasn't happy with it so I sold it and bought the Tamron 70-300.

I think the 70-300. My wife and I use the AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens which is designed for full size fx sensor but works fine on DX cameras. It is used with a D3100, D80 or D200. I’m attaching a photo she took last month on the east coast of Florida. This lens on a D3100. Hand held we like it. This pic is straight out of camera (sooc)

The Tamron is an FX lens. I use it on a D5100. The VR on the Tamron is very good. I find it quite sharp. I have not used the equivalent Nikon lens for comparison, but I am extremely happy with this lens.
