I just received the lens cap for my Nikon 500mm lens. I ordered it from Don Zeck http://donzecklenscap.com/len-cap-reviews/
I was so impressed that I ordered two more for my other lenses. Appears to be well made in the USA and fills a need.

Not exactly where I wish to spend money. I’m perfectly satisfied with the standard cap.

Does he make custom caps? (Lost the one to fit my old push-pull lens and no one I've seen and asked has any to fit.)

Maybe I'll ask him.

The Nikon 500mm, the 200-400 zoom, and the 300mm do not come with caps and I wanted caps so I chose to spend my money on these excellent caps.

Got the same for my 300mm and 200-400mm and they work great, just a little tight to put on.

Wow!!! $75 per cap + $33 for shipping!!! I guess compared to the cost of the glass for those lenses that don't come with a cap it might be a good investment, but I still think that is crazy. Especially the shipping. That is just plain wrong to charge that much to ship such a small light item.

eBay has about any size you need & if you scroll down the page, they get really reasonable. I just got an 82mm for my 300mm f4 for $4.99. https://www.ebay.com/itm/82mm-Snap-on-Center-Pinch-Lens-Cap-Dust-Cover-Protector-For-Nikon-New/112017506772?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Shipping is free in the USA. $33 is for international shipping except Canada which is $24

No kidding? Is that true for the 200/2, 400/2.8, and 600/4 that they sell lens caps for as well? I wouldn't have seen that coming.

So how do people protect the front lens surface by default then?

Given that situation, I guess I would too.

Will not work for Nikon exotics with front lens openings bigger than any filter to fit it and filters go in the lens near where it attaches to the camera.

Nikon provides a cloth hood that goes over the front lens.

My 300mm f4 prime came with that soft cover, too. I just feel a little safer with a lens cap.

You do know they do make elastic "hoodies" that do the same thing for about $20 ??

Thank you for your link. The Nikon 300mm f2.8 has a front elemement opening of about 107mm.
If you look at previous responses you will notice that those who own large front element lenses agree that the caps are quite good. Responses from those who do not own large front element lenses are ... different.
What it comes down to: If I spend thousands of dollars on a top of the line lens, I want to protect it with a cap. If the cap appears to be expensive, it is not, relative to the cost of the lens. My post was to simply let people know that caps do exist for these large front element lenses. BTW the front element of the Nikon 500mm f4 is about 125mm.
