My Nikkor 18-200 covers a lot of bases.

I don't know Thom from a hole in the wall. I do know the Nikkor 35mm F/1.8. Feels cheap, but sharp as a tack, and very affordable.

I recently purchased a Nikon 35/1.8G DX lens and find it a good fit for the D500 and basketball. Brings home nice sharp images.

My questions would be:
1-what camera are you going to use with this lens (Full Frame, APS-C, mirrorless the olympus/panasonic type...?
2-what use will you have for this lens? What type of photographs will you be using it for?
3-have you already got one or two lens(es) for that camera?

Ooops, D500, so I have another question, do you think that you may move toward FX format? ...then personally my lens of choice would be the 24-120 mm VRII (FX) lens, a good all around lens, if not the 18-200 mm DX. If you do not want to be encumbered, then I would go for a 24 mm (FX if you will upgrade).

Yes I have the 35mm 1.8 DX and its a great little lens but in my opinion its too narrow in field as a walk around lens being 52mm equiv. Take it indoors and its hard to use. True 35mm is a very nice angle of view both outdoors and wide enough for some indoor as well. I would not put the 35 1.8 DX on the D500 because its a pro body so if you want the best performance from the sensor it really deserves a better quality lens that is tack sharp across the entire range like the 35mm 1.4. FX. There is plenty of evidence that high performace sensors show up lens limitations so all I am saying is take some time to make the right choice for that particular body.

Curious whether or not you own a D500. I own both the D500 AND the 38/1.8G DX. They pair well, based upon my experience. True, it is much less expensive than the 1.4 versions; however it, along with several other Nikon lenses which are relatively inexpensive, are really great performers. It's also lightweight so it produces a combination that is light, easy to carry around and very useful when shooting indoor sports such as basketball, especially when you shooting game after game for five or six hours. The older I get, the better I appreciate something being very lightweight! Best of luck.

If by "walk around" you mean street photography, I would recommend a 50mm f/1.8 (the nifty fifty); or, since you have a crop sensor camera, perhaps even a 35mm prime. Both reasonably affordable.

Remember we are talking about a D500 here not full frame. If I was to chose a prime lens for the day it would be a 35mm equivalent and thats where the problem starts with the Nikon selection for DX cameras. Read some of Thom Hogans comments in lack of prime lenses for DX. So the best option would be a 24mm FX but they dont come cheap.

Nikon 24mm f2.8D. Small, fast enough, 36mm equivalent.

I agree if you chose to go prime the 24mm f2.8D could be a good start to see if its wide enough and if you like it for general use. I have to confess I started this stuff over 50 years ago with a 28mm f2 becoming my favorite 'walk around' lens. Back then zooms were only available in pro glass such as the famous 35-70 used by all press photographers. Today you actually have many mid range zooms to chose from. As a former pro photographer and thinking longer term you are best to invest in high quality glass and keep it even if you buy it used. I still have 10 pro lenses but I have changed bodies many times and yes I have now upgraded all my lenses to AF-S in part to take advantage of modern coatings, weather sealing and VR technology. Almost without exception modern pro grade lenses are significantly better than older glass. You have a pro body camera in the D500 so you should be thinking pro glass even if you have to wait a little time for the right one to come along second hand. I have just waited 5 years to pick up a mint 80-400 AF-S and got it half price. Apparently the 17-55 f2.8 is now available used for about have price. It's not VR but that's not so important in a mid range zoom but it is razor sharp.

A $400 experiment, and I suspect that you will get into situations where it isn't wide enough on a DX camera. I bought this very lens because my 35mm prime frequently isn't wide enough on my FX camera (D810). I like using primes for the weight factor, and I use both lenses, but my 24-120 F4 VR stays on the camera most of the time. You should look into some of the zooms that go wider for this camera. Many have been mentioned here.

I like the 24-120, and even use it on my D500 (or D7100). But not as a walk around lens, because it's just not wide enough.

Are you more interested in a large focal range lens like the Tamron 18-400 with the expected compromises such a lens brings with it, or in a shorter zoom range lens with better image quality? How much are you hoping to pay for it?
