Hi,

I use UV filters for protection only, having had a nasty experience when a camera when knocked out of my hands. You might like to look at using Xume magnetic filters ( Manfrotto). I remove the filter before takin any photos and being magnetic its very quick and easy.

If you're using a filter to protect your lens when you're not taking pictures, why not just use the lens cap? It comes with the lens and it's cheaper than a filter.

Yep. But you would still be wrong. You folks must make an effort to understand the laws of physics. Do helmets prevent all concussions? No. But they help. Do airbags prevent all injuries? No. But they help. Do work gloves prevent all hand injuries? No. But they help. The list goes on and on. You guys must still believe the world is flat. Go back and take a remedial science class.

I had a camera and lens shift in the back of a car and fall on to the pavement when the hatch was opened. The camera landed diagonally, lens first. The filter shattered, but brass ring the filter had reinforced the front of the lens and took the brunt of the impact. The net effect was no damage or deformation to the lens. I had a tough time removing the shattered filter and crunched brass ring, but other than that there were no ill effects.

Were this a firearms forum we could debate, without end, whether the 9mm or .45acp is the better round with each side being certain they possessed the truth. As in this discussion, I suspect the answer is it depends on circumstances.

I always use top quality filters during day if I use them and always remove all filters when shooting at night
