When you get a good photo printer and set it up, you are setting the system to print with the exact ink as made for that printer. I can't believe that the refill market will match that exact color. People bring ink into Costco and get them refilled, the cartridges are from Canon, Epson or HP, are all the reds, greens etc. the same?
I'll pay more and use OEM for my photos.

I wonder where Canon gets the ink they use in their cartridges. Seems doubtful that they manufacture it in house but rather outsource it. Anyone have any into on this?

Also, do any of the independent ink cartridge sellers warranty their products to include any damage that it caused to a printer? Thanks.

Btw, I appreciate this being such a civil thread. Past threads on this subject on UHH have actually provoked some angry responses directed at posters who wouldn't believe that ink from independent companies would damage their printers. Good job everyone!

I have been using a Pro-100 since June of 2014. The OEM cartridges are small and expensive. But until the 1 year warranty ran out I stayed with the Canon cartridges.
I then switched to Precision Colors refill system. http://www.precisioncolors.com/
I spent a lot of time that 1st year researching third party ink.
Refilling is a bit more trouble, but well worth it in my opinion. The kit I started with came with 4 oz of each color - enough for aprx 7 complete fills. ($175 dollars = $25 a set vs $124 from Canon) It also had a set of 8 refillable cartridges, I had to transfer the chips from the Canon cartridges - I also have two extra sets of chips in case I need them in the future. Due to a shortage of refillable cartridges that kit is sold out right now. You can get the same kit-minus the cartridges- for $124.98 and instructions on flushing, cleaning and modifying your old cartridges to refill. You can get a set of pre-flushed and cleaned Cli-8 cartridges (same as the Pro-100 Cli-42 except chips - you have to swap the chips - for $7 each - $56 for all 8, that brings the price to $181.) They do have after market cartridges with chips for $40 a set of 8 but they warn you they are not up to the Canon standards. For $16 and the time to swap the chips the Canon cartridges are worth it. Replacement ink is available in up to 16 oz bottles.
The ink Precision uses comes from Image Specialists - a commercial ink company that supplies commercial printing companies and ink cartridge makers. The mixes for the Pro-100 are custom. http://www.image-specialists.com/

I have been using Precision Colors for over 3 years now and have had no major problems and am very satisfied with my prints.
You do need to calibrate your monitor and better yet also calibrate the printer.

Jose Rodriguez has some great videos on the Pro-100 and Precision Color ink use. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlV7cqqladQ

Agree on both Precision Colors and Jose Rodriguez videos. Carefully read/follow their instruction. There is a compatibility problem with Canon/Precision Colors yellow inks. Don't mix them. Precision Colors carefully explains this and sells kits that handle this. The videos suggest having two cartridge sets of all colors. Then, exchange the entire set even if only one cartridge needs refilling. Bottom line: If you do lots of printing, Precision Colors inks are great. If you don't print a lot, use a commercial printing service and save money and hassle.

when you get a refill is it made to the Red, Yellow or Blue for your make printer? Are Canon, HP and Epson's colors the same? People go into Costco and have the ink cartridge refilled some are Canon of HP or what ever. Why set the color on your printer? Is the ink arrival or will it fade in 6 months? Do you reset the printer for the aftermarket ink?

This debate is almost as intense as the Third Party camera batteries. Watson/Wasabi vs OEM batteries?

I use "LD" ink Cart.s in my Canon Pro 100.
And so far haven't had a problem yet.
I am well pleased with the results.

Don't let anyone tell you that useing other inks will void you factory warrenty.
If they do, tell them to look into the "Magnuson-Moss Warrenty Act"
This is a Government Law.

Me too.

I used cartridges I got from eBay for my Pro-100 and have not had any problems whatever. https://www.ebay.com/itm/8-Combo-Pack-Ink-Cartridges-for-Canon-CLI-42-CLI42-CLI-42-PIXMA-PRO-100-PRO-100S/182134369964?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

$22.50 for a complete set.

I have the Canon Pixma Pro 10 printer, so a different set of cartridges than the 100 uses. I had used Canon ink for about two years and decided to try a 3rd party source. After doing some reading on UHH, I decided to try Ink Farm cartridges. For some reason they did not work well and I had terrible prints. It seemed like the colors were not printing from the Ink Farm cartridges. I contacted Ink Farm and their customer service was excellent. They offered free replacement or 100% refund. I decided on the refund and ordered Canon again.

I will stay with Canon for right now, but may try the Precision Ink option in the future.

Have an Epson 1290 still going strong with compatible inks after 14 years of continuous use printing A3 prints
Purchased a Canon Pixma Pro 100 2 Years ago and have used compatibles since the Canon ink supplied with the printer ran out. I have purchased compatible inks from the same supplier for 25 years with no problems.

I use aftermarket ink cartridges in all of my printers Epson, Cannon, Brother. The only one you are better off with genuine cartridges are HP because they have the print head on the cartridge. At least I think that is what that little circuit board is. But that is also the reason I will never buy an HP printer.

I have used only Canon printers for several years and until last year I always used OEM ink. Based on comments I read on The UHH, I tried LD ink for my last reload and haven't seen any difference in the images I print nor any differences in the way the printer is working. So far so good. The LD ink was about ⅓ of the Canon OEM ink.
