I have some old fiters and I wonder if anyone uses these sizes anymore; Minolta 49mm circular polarizing filter, Tiffen 49mm 6 pt star filter, Hoya 55mm circular polarizing filter, B&W 52E star filter. They don't fit any lens I have. Throw them away or can someone use them?

You can use rings to adapt to your lenses if they are not too different, the most useful filters will be the cpl filters but the star filters will also be of interest. if your lenses are a bit wider you may get some vignetting on zooms at the long end they will be fine.

Put them on ebay and see what you get, better than going to landfill.

You might try listing them with details and pictures on the UHH Members Buy/Sell/Trade — Classified Forum. Ebay Closed Transactions are a good gauge of current prices, but if you wish you can just suggest interested parties make their ‘best offer’.

It may be worth listing them on Craigslist.

Sony and Canon still take the 49mm on a few lenses.
Sony and Nikon make lenses taking 55mm filters. Not many today use those sizes anymore but if you advertise them at a good enough price someone is sure to be able to use them.

Thank you everyone for your prompt and wise responses. I will try to list them on Craigslist first as I'm not registered on ebay.

I gave a bunch of filters that I was no longer using to a local high school.

Nice idea Mac, our high school here doesn't have any photography courses.

49 and 52mm are fairly obsolete sizes as they were generally film primes. I don't know of any Canon EF, EF-S, or EF-M lens using those sizes as I believe the current minimum standard size is 58mm.

I have several old film lenses, vintage '80s. I would need to get them out but I think they are 52mm. My wife has a 52mm EF that she got with her Rebel film camera in the early '90s. If you have any lenses that size, save them as museum pieces for your kids.

Put them in the buy/sell section.

If you have a local camera store, they might have a freebie section. Take 'em to see.
