TREES by Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I saw and filmed Joyce Kilmer's grave in (either) Oise-Aine or Aine-Marne Cemetery in France in 1978. I was filming the WWI Drum and Bugle Corps from Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, on their return to England and France to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Great War.

Thanks for your reply. Like you, Trees is one of the very very few poems I can still remember, since I'm a lover of all plant life, especially trees.

Have you published any of your documentaries? Filmed rather than shot, so you must be a serious cinematographer. My son is leaving today to film the Bart Starr award the day before the super bowl.

For years there was a restaurant in Kilmer's hometown called "Nobody's Inn" near the railroad track where he wrote about "The House with Nobody" in it. That may be valuable info to someone someday!
I'll finish my coffee now and get on with more productive activity😊

My 45 minute documentary is on DVD but not a great reproduction from the 16mm film. Frankly, I was an amateur just trying to preserve an event that I knew could never happen again. As art, the film is obviously amateurish. But it's a piece of history, now approaching 40 years ago as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. I dabbled a bit in travelogues after that with my own, expensive 16 mm Aaton (I had used a used Beaulieu camera with 100' rolls of film - constantly changing reels and missing shots). I stopped filming in the middle 1980s and sold the camera for 10 cents on the dollar.

While my son is a professional, I am a rank amateur, but I made a promo video for the multicultural department at Richland College in Dallas and they had it on their web site for five years. I did use a little Aftereffects in the production and of course had to work through the politics of the school production department (We are spending thousands of dollars for a production and it has to have the proper logo, colors, etc). I think they ended up using some of my footage in their expensive production.

In 1983 I was second cameraman on a shoot for a religious documentary on Our Lady of Fatima. The shooting took place in England and in Portugal. The film was narrated by Ricardo Montalban. That pretty much ended my career in filmmaking. (I am a retired Oral Surgeon.)

If you can make it a trip to the Joyce Kilmer National Forest in western north carolina is a must see place. It has easy walking trails that have some of the largest trees east of the mississippi river. Truly a beautiful place to visit.

Thanks. And Hartwick Pines State Park near Grayling MI is probably equally as beautiful and very walkable. My wife and I have applied to be lighthouse keepers for two weeks this spring, summer, or fall. Would be great photo ops. We applied last year as well but weren't picked. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Didn't Ricardo Montalba advertise for Chrysler the " Cordoba" with Corinthian leather?
