I haven't seen them recently, but some time ago you could buy colorizing kits at Michaels.
According to my brother, the method was much the same, if not identical, to the way my Dad (a professional photographer) colorized some photos.
The reason Michaels gave for these kits, was to make your photos look like photos from when? 1940's, 1950's? for your scrapbooks.
I have only one of these colorized photos my Dad did, taken in late 1953, of my sister.

My mother taught me to hand color photographs when I was a teenager in the 50s. There were two types of colors; one was watercolors which came in sheets and the other was oil colors in little tubes. The watercolors were used on snapshots (glossy paper) and the oils were used on heavy matte paper. We used cotton q-tips or homemade ones (tiny bits of cotton on toothpicks).

I used to hand tint photos using Marshalls oils & pencils. There were also wet & dry dyes, and markers. JixiPix has software that can mimic the look.

I did a few hand-coloured B&W prints years ago, using Johnsons (Water-Based ) dyes. One tip I learned ...In doing portraits, sepia tone the print first, you are half way to skin tone before you start with the dyes.

I'm sure there are digital techniques now, but my mother did a few photographs back in the 1950s. She used a very fine brush and what I assume were a specialized set of translucent dyes.

I may even have one somewhere, hope I have, but finding it could be tricky.

yup, Marshall oil colours were the industry standard in your dusty old days. and a retouching machine.

As I said earlier, movies have been done by hand, with no computers involved.

Whatever.

Your mom is something else. What happened to you?

I grew up to become one of those people that my mother warned me about! After that it was easy!
