I am considering expanding my FF lens arsenal with this lens - Nikon 300mm f/4E PF ED VR AF-S. I would appreciate comments and experience from UHH members who have and used this lens. My camera body is a Nikon Df. Thanks in advance.

I have owned a Nikkor 300 f4 PF VR + Nikkor TC14EIII for some time and it is a brilliant lens: even when used with the 1.4 TC (which is seldom removed from mine). I use it with a Nikon D500 and it is an incredibly lightweight set up. IQ is fabulous and the lens is short and manoeuvrable, though I do prefer my Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6 . Should you buy a 300mm f4 PF VR I doubt you will be disappointed.

I just bought this lens and used it only once due to the lousy weather conditions (rain) in the Vancouver area.

The other day, I did try it out, shooting a Barn Owl in flight, during a light shower and failing light. They turned out better than I anticipated. Shot at ISO 3600 @ f/4 with no TC attached because I don't own one.

Check out photos posted my pmackd. I just came across his photos, some of which were posted in the area you see when logging in and are quite good. He uses this lens in combination with the D500 and D750. They should give you an idea of what the lens can do. Excellent photos.

Thanks. Here's the link to the photos SteveR is referring to: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-506050-3.html#8554398

My 300 f4 E PF VR lives on the D500. Worked great on a D7100 and D750 as well. I can't say enough positive things about this lens. Sharp, light, focuses fast, VR is very good. Occasionally I have seen the issue of VR not behaving as expected around 1/100 sec, but usually it's fine there too, and at slower speeds as well.

Here's a no crop shot of a hummingbird focused on the eye. This at f4. My tests have shown the lens to be slightly sharper at f5.6 though some dispute this.

this is one tack sharp lens and my "go to" 300mm while my 300mm f2.8 stays at home 90% of the time.
