I worked very hard for 35 years caring for veterans. What did I do to deserve all the insults about government employees from people who are clueless about how hard the average government employee works?

That’s not a guarantee, but would be a political hot potato to not pay us.

We waste a lot of time and resources on this political game. Not just the shutdown but the incessant CRs. We spend half of every year...half of our time....juggling drips of resources and managing uncertainty and risk.

Right now, personally, I’m waiting for the budget so my leadership can buy me a decent computer. I use relatively complicated Excel workbooks and my computer can’t handle them. I spend half my time waiting for the spinning wheel to stop and that’s a lot of productivity lost. In the meantime, last week we were issued new computers. They are identical to the ones we were using save for running windows 10 instead of 7....and they’re 10 years old. Probably bought at the last minute to spend Budget money that could have been used for training if only it had been available on 1 Oct.

It’s s mess.

Trust me, I know, I get an earful every time we call Virginia! If the general public knew the current status of the infrastructure, with what is going on in this world, I would be buying stock in sleep aid products. Thank you for your service! And, your venting is welcome here, I am an expert at listening. Now, should I call my daughter this AM or......Ah, I think I better grab another cup of coffee first!

Been there done that. I have first hand knowledge of government waste, theft and incompetence. And BTW, I don't paint everyone with the same brush but know damn well the private sector could not turn a profit operating like the government does. And Georgi, in case you forgot, you work/worked for us!

Before you comment you need to research what Non-essential and Essential mean.

It's not the dictionary definition. It's what the gov't definition of essential/non.. is that count's. My feeling is that the vast majority of government employees are redundant and if all of a sudden 1/2 of them (other than millitary) were to disappear no one would n otice any difference.

Just sitting at my desk, post-shutdown waiting for the spinning wheel of death to stop. I’ve had the audacity to paste about 1,500 rows into my 61,000 row spreadsheet. Excel can handle a million rows, but my HP can’t even manage 50,000 without a meltdown. And it just stopped after 8 1/2 minutes. Now it’s gonna really freak. I’m going to copy a dozen or so formulas into my newly pasted data.....venting (me and the computer both!)
On another note.....
It’s raining here today...actually, more like misting. Doubled my commute....took over two hours to get to work this morning. If she had to drive anywhere, go for the coffee.

If they are "non-essential" WTF do we need them in the first place? Hence the terms, "trough divers", "grifters" and malingerers.

By a congress that is inept and ineffectual no less.

As an Sir Force vet I want to thank you for what you do. I've always thought the Air Force functioned quite efficiently.

Also, I completely disagree about the myth that gov employees don't work hard. They are no different than private sector employees. Their jobs are often quite different so it is hard to compare them.

One of my best friends was a bank examiner for the FDIC. I know he performed a valuable service for people and they don't know anything about it. The private sector banks sometimes do dumb things or unscrupulous things that jeopardize the peoples money. I know other gov employees work just as hard as anyone else.

I'm glad you don't have to worry about this for awhile. The solution seems so simple to me. Put together a bill that solves the DACA issue and include trump's useless wall. Then everyone gets what they want.

The Dept of education, which didn't exist, untill recently has 4400 employees and spends about 70 billion/year. Education is not a federal responsibility, it's a state issue. It ought to be shut down, and the money should be returned to the states. 4400 non essential employees

Thanks. I was commissioned an Army 2LT in 1988. Now I’m an Air Force civilian. We’ve been living with CRs and the threat of shutdown for over two decades. I’m prepared to weather one without pay...you need to be able to do that, or worry constantly about living for some time without pay. Savings accounts are handy that way.

I never forgot who I was working for. I worked to serve veterans and I was employed by the taxpayers including the clueless ones.
