I have a problem with my rechargeable batteries. When I go to charge four AA batteries after they have sat for a month, one refuses to charge. It does not matter which position in the charger or if I try to charge it by its self, it won't charge, just flashes red. My question is: is there a way to fool the charger into charging the battery or can I fully discharge the battery and then charge it? In the last 3 months I have "lost" 7 batteries.

I've never had a rechargeable battery that didn't eventually fail. Every type. NiCads are particularly bad (I have to replace the battery in a motorized skylight crank opener about once a year), but I've also had lithium and NiMH batteries fail in laptops and camcorders and phones. One lithium battery in an iPhone swelled up to the point of popping the back off. Lucky that it didn't explode. It seems that the technology needs a breakthrough.

I have used Duracell and Energizer and had the same issue as described with both, red light and no charge. I would love to be 'green' and use rechargeables rather than throwaways but I can't justify the added cost for the short service life. I have even tried to use them in LED flashlights thinking that the low power draw would yield better results. No dice.
Charger is a Duracell brand that I bought with the first batch of batteries.

The Eneloop technology is superior.
It isn't just a label, and it has been well tested by many on UHH.

When doing my research, I came across a reviewer saying their batteries seem inferior to their own alkaline batteries. Most of my reading points towards Eneloops as being superior to most of not all other rechargeables. You also need a good charger, one which can condition a battery, and can treat batteries individually rather than charge in pairs. Cheap chargers will spoil any batteries performance.
